For a song whose record label wanted 15 versions and they were shooting for 4 instead, there ended up being one official version that no one has ever heard of until recently and one made by a Brazilian comedy group. Six music videos altogether. People are sleeping on music video history.

I have been informed that Weird Al appeared in a version of Cake's "Short Skirt/Long Jacket", having a cameo in their LA Version. This is the first time im hearing about this version and this may either be another lost version or was scrapped. @thebandcake.bsky.social is this true?

So is it still called the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award or does MTV and Paramount want to forget they ever called it that?

Just wanna say this video technically counts as talking about lost media due to one of the videos to "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" is not publicly available. Would love for people to be aware of how music videos tend to be undervalued in this era of preservation.

Would've bet the farm on Harper swinging so hard for that back-to-back homer his left arm would've ended up somewhere on the third-base line, never would've guessed he'd actually connect on it

Excellent video! Some of the people which appear in the MTV Brazil version of the video are from a humour group called "Hermes And Renato" that has a show in the channel , it was broadcast here at the time the song was released

ITS MUSIC VIDEO TIME! Squeezing out a second video for September, this session talks about the making of Cake's "Short Skirt/Jacket" and how John McCrea ended up making a video that had people reacting on the street to his bands song. Ends up being funny. Thanks for your time youtu.be/PCyf4M7kGfc

If you wanna help keep the channel running and to see early Music Video Time episodes, for just two dollars a month you can watch them a day early. And for five dollars a month you can see your name at the end. It would be much appreciated either way. www.patreon.com/MusicVideoTi...

Man if watching the VMAs didn't sting me so much as it does every year. At least there are braver people than me who can still talk about it.

NEW VIDEO: In the past I've explored who to blame for Stomp Clap and Britpop, now its Butt Rock's turn. Also known as post-grunge and divorced-dad rock, it is the moment where all grunge's punk ethics and underground legitimacy gets erased in the place of some actually pretty great radio songs

Actually got copyright claimed by this company for my Punk Rock Girl video. For the first time based on "melody or lyrics". Never knew this existed but if they are just a scam company I definitely disputed this. www.reddit.com/r/COPYRIGHT/...

Nirvana as MTV's 2026 Video Vanguard recipient: A fascinatingly counterintuitive honoree for an award increasingly used as a Please Come Do a 10-Minute Medley of Your Biggest Pop Hits carrot. (Also interesting that Michael Jackson no longer appears in the award name; Nirvana triumphs over MJ again!)

MTV announcing Nirvana as the 2026 recipient of the Video Vanguard Video Music Award.
