"Evelyn Normielib" is a meme for a reason. Renee Good was a minivan mom. Judith herself was a widow - not some young femme fatale. Her act demoralized the other side. That's what will win - turnout on our side coupled with a demoralized opposing side.

Women in political spaces, like women in EVERY space considered "serious," are often overlooked, devalued, and mocked. But they have shown to be the most stalwart, reliable workers on the ground - especially retirees, but definitely those who are not slotted in with the "Youths."

…They also use colors that are quite striking and non-partisan. Maybe the more radical folks in my audience balk at the idea of using an organization that has so many "Liberals" (as opposed to "Leftists"), but the fact is these people are moving mountains, largely thanks to women on the ground.

A little bit of background, although please do click through to the post: I hesitated to lean into the "No Kings" branding, for lack of a better term. But they have put forth the largest pro-democracy protests in American history, and I wanted symbolism that reflected people from across the nation…

An stylized illustration consisting of different blue and yellow shades. A woman in a longsleeve billowing dress and head scarf charges forth with a sword. She carries the head of a bearded man in her other hand. Below her, women of all ages and races charge force carrying flags and signs. They have "No Kings" on the signs and the flags have a simple crown outline with a red X over it. In the top right corner it says " תן מרמה בלשוני לסכל עצת עבד אל אדוניו ועצת אדון אל עבדיו ונגדעו קרנותם ביד אישה - Judith 9:12" in blue text. At the bottom of the illustration in larger, dark blue text it says "ניט אײן מאָל האָבן שױן נאָבעלע פֿרױען,

All Jewish languages are manifestations of ethnic solidarity and there is no "pure, non-problematic" piece of modern Jewish history you can latch onto. We are a complex people, like every other people on earth.

This work is the first in a while that incorporates Yiddish, specifically from the song "Working Women." The Yiddish language has been tokenized in a disturbing way in the years since Oct 7, as a language that, unlike spoken Hebrew, is untouched by "Israel's ethno-supremacy" or whatever.

I check into Facebook like once a month or so, because I do Buy Nothing. I was so enraged seeing this next to a piece of art I actually made. I don’t know what else to say. I’m just gonna let it speak for itself.
A headline says, “Hand off what’s on your plate. Tell Muse what you need and it takes care of the rest.” A picture of my drawing of cute quails with a rainbow heart between them. Underneath is a caption that says “turn this into a crayon masterpiece.”

From my “Ner Tamid” Series, this illustration is of a Holocaust-era Jewish partisan. She holds a lulav rather than a rifle, but there is a grenade rather than an etrog (citron). The words say “Let us not go like sheep to the slaughter!” And “We will outlive them”. Available as a print.
An illustration of a young woman in a simple military button down shirt holding up a lulav with a defiant look on her face. She holds a yellow grenade in the place of an etrog/citron. She stands in front of a brick wall that has a poster on it in block Yiddish letters: "Let us not go like sheep to the slaughter!" in yellow letters on a blue background. Below it is a circular seal that says "We will outlive them" with a stylized torah scroll unrolled as a border. Two hands make the priestly blessing, with a flame between them and crown above them. Below the words "Ner Tamid" (Eternal Light) form a bowl. The image in total is a lamp containing the eternal flame itself. At the top in small yellow block text is BS"D. The overall style is like that of a block print. The color scheme is yellows, blues, and beige.

It's finally starting to feel like Fall in Philly.
A two-circle Venn Diagram titled "Flat White." On the left is a flat white, which is a coffee drink, in a cup. On the right is a pile of "flat white" varietal pumpkins. They are squat and off-white. In the center where the circles cross it says "IT'S AUTUMN, B---S!" The third word is mostly covered with fall leaves.

Panel one shows an eldritch god, a skeletal possum like creature with large antlers, saying "I AM AS OLD AS THE FOREST ITSELF".
Panel two shows a stick figure saying, "But you must have been a baby at some point?"
Panel three shows the eldritch god saying "Well. Yes."
Panel four shows a tiny eldritch baby sitting on a rock, his antlers just little twigs.

New Comic: Based on the infamous scene from the movie School Ties, this is a common experience when we try to get people - Jewish and non-Jewish - to address antisemitism. Patrons saw this comic first. Please consider supporting me there. www.patreon.com/emilyk
A prep school boy sits on a bed in his room, looking back and forth between a woman on his left and a man on his right. Above his bed on the wall is a banner with a swastika on it and the phrase "Go Home JEW" under it. This is a scene from the movie "School Ties."

The woman on the left says, "didn't you go on a "Birthright Israel" trip last year? They're probably expressing their opposition to Zionist settler colonialism." The man on the right says, "I don't see any antisemitism. They didn't write a word against Israel."

They released a detailed statement a couple days ago. They have a contract that goes through 2027 (I think) and cancelling that alone would literally mean the end of SPX. Honestly a lot of people will be hurt by this who are not wealthy Marriott executives. They’re creatives on thin margins.

Never mind that nobody is making movies based on comics about complex women’s lives, let alone lesbians, let alone with a big budget. If Walden gets a modest option fee that’d probably be the best she could hope for, and Cleves is owed NONE of that.

Since this person disabled replies etc I’m not gonna share their identity but I think what they wrote is spot on. I would t be shocked to find out Cleves’s Tech VP husband said “comics make bank at the movies, where’s YOUR piece?” Without knowing those same creators die penniless.
literally talked to my husband about it
as "in the year between cleves giving
her blessing and putting up the
callout, a nephew at christmas or
 something brought up that spiderman
is based on comics" it appears that
the nephew was actually the husband

something interesting in the Cleves/Walden debacle is the pervasive assumption that comics are a) necessarily an inferior, derivative form that can't be credited with the diligence of research or scholarship, and b) so vastly popular and lucrative that "real writing" must be protected from them

As a Certified Queer™ I’ll say it: it was low for Cleves to imply she was a member of the queer community -tagging her grievance post with #pride- IF SHE DOESNT claim that identity. Bisexuals and pansexual folks exist. Aces exist. They marry men and are still queer. That said..

The only references to someone learning to sew is Charity telling Sylvia she's been "teaching her for months" (pg 30) and Charity having her sister Silence help her improve her sewing (pg 137). I don't see any references to an aunt but then perhaps I'm not looking too carefully.

Barry has read both Cleves and Walden's books, and afaik, is the only person weighing in who has done this. I've read all of Walden's but only bits of Cleves, but I'd easily recommend either, depending on what you seek. Walden's is a comic w/ fictionalizations; Cleves' is purely text and fact.

Black and white 2 panel comic called "Retro music."

2. An anthropomorphic iPod in the DJ booth. It says, "OK, CATS AND KITTENS! That was Its_Been-a_while_-_staind.mp3 from Limewire! Next up is BadBoys-BobMarley-128kb.mp3, and later on, my-baby-lil-romeo-hq.exe from Kazaa Lite. I don't think it's a music file, but let's give it a whirl!"

YOUR PORTFOLIO CRIT
THINGS I'D TELL YOU IF I WERE LOOKING AT YOUR WORK IN PERSON
1 Violating the 180 degree rule makes this sequence hard to follow
2 A few more incidental overlaps will make this foreshortening clearer
3 Symmetrical compositions with a character dead center imply an important moment. Don't draw every panel like that?
4 This __ looks kind of fake. Take the time to look at reference instead of just making it up
5 An establishing shot will help the reader understand where this takes place.
6 Find a life-drawing session to attend, or practice from photos online.
7 Show these pages to someone who doesn't know the story and ask them to tell the story back to you.
8. Nudge this part over a bit to eliminate that tangency.
9 You flattened out the depth by rendering the foreground, middle ground, & background with the same values. Create depth and direct the eye by organizing them into overlapping planes of light & dark.
10 there are better ways to use your time than rendering every brick.
11 these characters look like they're floating (or falling). Draw figures and bg from the same eye level.
12 Unless this will be a wordless comic, leave more room for the lettering
