From my “Ner Tamid” Series, this illustration is of a Holocaust-era Jewish partisan. She holds a lulav rather than a rifle, but there is a grenade rather than an etrog (citron). The words say “Let us not go like sheep to the slaughter!” And “We will outlive them”. Available as a print.

Since this person disabled replies etc I’m not gonna share their identity but I think what they wrote is spot on. I would t be shocked to find out Cleves’s Tech VP husband said “comics make bank at the movies, where’s YOUR piece?” Without knowing those same creators die penniless.

something interesting in the Cleves/Walden debacle is the pervasive assumption that comics are a) necessarily an inferior, derivative form that can't be credited with the diligence of research or scholarship, and b) so vastly popular and lucrative that "real writing" must be protected from them

Barry has read both Cleves and Walden's books, and afaik, is the only person weighing in who has done this. I've read all of Walden's but only bits of Cleves, but I'd easily recommend either, depending on what you seek. Walden's is a comic w/ fictionalizations; Cleves' is purely text and fact.

Been a year. Time to repost this.

YOUR PORTFOLIO CRIT
THINGS I'D TELL YOU IF I WERE LOOKING AT YOUR WORK IN PERSON
1 Violating the 180 degree rule makes this sequence hard to follow
2 A few more incidental overlaps will make this foreshortening clearer
3 Symmetrical compositions with a character dead center imply an important moment. Don't draw every panel like that?
4 This __ looks kind of fake. Take the time to look at reference instead of just making it up
5 An establishing shot will help the reader understand where this takes place.
6 Find a life-drawing session to attend, or practice from photos online.
7 Show these pages to someone who doesn't know the story and ask them to tell the story back to you.
8. Nudge this part over a bit to eliminate that tangency.
9 You flattened out the depth by rendering the foreground, middle ground, & background with the same values. Create depth and direct the eye by organizing them into overlapping planes of light & dark.
10 there are better ways to use your time than rendering every brick.
11 these characters look like they're floating (or falling). Draw figures and bg from the same eye level.
12 Unless this will be a wordless comic, leave more room for the lettering

Oliphant was my main influence as well. It helped that his style looked like a much looser Watterson (or rather, Watterson is a tighter Oliphant? everything is interconnected) - I strove to be as sharp and devastating as Oliphant in my own high school paper. I still strive for that.

So the "Charity & Sylvia" Walden/Cleeves discourse seems to have died down, and I for one am happy with that. BUT - the Amazon page for Walden's graphic novel currently has six one-star reviews from people who give no sign of having read it, and 7 five-star reviews from people who have. (1/2)

I think multiple things could happen, including what’s described here. I think we need to remember that a comic and an academic biography don’t have 100% crossover. And anyone looking for FACTS will read CLIVES’ work. Walden openly says she invented/changed things for narrative’s sake.

I have sympathy with Cleves; while not on the same level Anthony Bourdain did the same thing to me. He took an article I wrote called "When Food Attacks - Food-based Yokai in Japan" and turned it into the comic HUNGRY GHOSTS. I got a little thank you but that was it. It hurt. Not gonna lie. (1)

There are valid issues with the Charity and Silvia release by Tillie Walden, but I don't see how people can think she "stole the cover design." These book designs look nothing alike, other than they are both based on the only known image of the two women, this silhouette.

I read both books, and really liked both of them. But the books are extremely different experiences. One of the main concerns of Cleves' book - proving that the relationship was a sexual one - never comes up in Walden's book. Walden gives the characters a happy ending that only fiction can provide.

And it really bothers me that so many people accusing Walden of "ripping off," of plagiarism, of "theft" - have clearly never read Walden's graphic novel. Most of them probably haven't read Cleves' book, for that matter. How can you possibly claim to know that without reading both books?
