Happy Wran's Day! The Wren, or Lá An Dreoilín, is still strong in parts of Ireland (notably Kerry), with elements entwined with nature and the pagan roots of this time of year. "Up with the kettle And down with the pan Give us a penny to bury the wran" Prints: www.ciaraioch.com/artprints/p/...
Digital copy of the original linocut print of the strawboy design (black and white, crosshatched background, featuring someone wearing the straws, with a wren on each side)

Somewhat surreal to be quoted in the New York Times coverage of our show. Although I must say, we do look a little broader than just disability and the built environment ;) www.nytimes.com/2025/08/26/a...

Rewatching the Matt Smith finales has me in instant feels the way it’s been lacking for the recent ones because I actually care about the characters. I miss these arcs and development! I don’t mind not having classic Easter eggs and big budgets! ❤️❤️ 🟦

Using this as a creative writing exercise where, to maximally waste the reader's time, I start with a plausible-sounding story and descend into chaos.
An online form.

4. Please provide details of the action or complaints procedure taken to date including, if relevant, your employer’s disciplinary procedures.

In early May, I informally broached the subject with my manager and was ignored. On the 20th of May, I wrote a formal email to Susy from HR (and CC'd my manager and the company CEO) outlining my concerns. That's when the proverbial feces hit the proverbial fan. The CEO summoned me into his office, called me an "impudent worm who needs to respect the trans agenda", and threatened my immediate removal from the company.

5. Please outline the current status of your case.

The current status is that I am in the middle of a tense fight with the CEO. Over the course of last week, pointed words transitioned into shouted threats, and the shouting soon erupted into bloody, gendered violence. "Looks like I'll have to get serious," muttered the CEO, as he drew his phallic revolver.

6. Please provide details to date of losses sustained or harms caused as a result of the case.

I sustained three bullet wounds from the ensuing gunfight.

7. Have you previously approached any other organisations or professional bodies for funding or support?

I have received no support. The light is fading. All hope is lost. But wait.
Who's that gallant silhouette upon the horizon? Could it be... Wes Streeting?

Why do we undervalue the lives of disabled people so much? Why do we expect them to survive on a disability benefit that keeps them below poverty line - especially when being chronically ill drives expenses up? A former “friend” explained it ti me & showed me how entrenched ableism is 🧵

I’ll end with one last passage.
Photograph of a page from Raicovich’s 2021 book, Culture Strike. The text reads:

The breath of life, then, no matter where we live or how, is undoubtedly what connects us, and the pandemic allows us to see how the necessity of breath makes us interdependent. My exhale becomes your inhale and vice versa. And yet all breath and all life does not matter equally on this planet. And society reflects this reality, including cultural spaces and museums.
Given the access and power I have within the cultural realm, this is my chosen space to make change, with the hope that these efforts not only take root, but that they also might provide a model for the ways in which such change can occur on broader societal scales.

Finally got around to finishing Laura Raicovich’s Culture Strike from 2021. Struck by nearly every word, but especially resonant with me at this time of spinning plates and competing deadlines was this passage.
Photograph of a page from Raicovich’s 2021 book, Culture Strike. The text reads:

From an institutional perspective, I firmly believe that the single most important and impactful way to make changes is to radically slow down. The pace of cultural production is simply too fast. We have to ask ourselves: How many exhibitions are truly necessary or even desirable in a single year? How many public programs? More is sometimes just more, and not better.
Already-thin human resources are stretched beyond their capacities to function at the speed with which cultural organizations install new exhibitions, invent new projects and plan events, talks, performances, and so on. How do we do all of these things better? Not just faster, not just more, but better and deeper?

Slowing down is crucial because it allows us to take more time to make important decisions. In so doing, we engage more people in the process: it allows us to liaise with more staff members, talk to additional stakeholders, do more of the work that would make cultural space more inclusive.

A calm Yule to all, happy solstice. A time for light, and cleaning.
A black and white graded photograph. A table with a cotton placemat, on which has been placed two tall white candles on black candleholders, and a tea light in a small round glass holder. The candles are alight. In front of the tall candles is a small metal incense burner with star shaped holes. Smoke rises from the burner and curls around the tall candles.

Don’t do something just because you think it’s the right course or route for employment. Everything is precarious, I haven’t seen many permanent roles at all lately. So use your time doing what you love and nourish your soul, have great experiences.

1. It’s hard to be disabled and have a career. 2. You should do the creative thing because when you’re in work you won’t have the time or the energy. 3. Most of what I know I learned on the job. 4. If you can organise an event you can probably organise an exhibition, it’s just a matter of scale.

I’ve helped out at a few careers insights things over the years, but I’ve always felt the need to give the advice I think I “ought to” or am “supposed to” alongside my honest thoughts. Last night I was at a speed mentoring event, and it just clicked that no, tell them everything, so I did.
