Thanks! I based the design of actual Wau kites in Malaysia. They are all pretty colourful! The other kite designs are from different parts of Southeast Asia (I can't rem where, did this a while ago. haha)

The look of killer kites depends on the traditional kite design of the region.

Balancing how much information to provide while leaving space for players to make things up was a bit of a challenge, so I’m super thankful for important dev-editing from @ehronlime.bsky.social and @brianyaksha.bsky.social . And as usual, Eli Gimbad for going through all 10+ drafts with me.

Oh gosh. This was one of my most embarrassing mistakes. Accidentally an important bit in one of the last edits before going to print. Fixed it in the pdfs but couldn't do anything with the print run. This was the entry for R13. Do you have the pdf?

I released my 3rd Kala Mandala adventure — Tragedy at Zaya’s Theatre — last week. It’s heavily inspired by two things: Southeast Asian/Indian performing arts, and how so many things (e.g. objects, plants) have sentience in SEA. What if non-material things like theatre plays can become sentient?

Bark cloth is probably the OG cloth, not only in Southeast Asia but in Africa and all the way to the islands of Polynesia. Bark cloth is literally made of bark! Rather, the inner bark of certain trees.

Some of the art: "Summoning Aoswang, Prince of the Undersky" "Trading With Gimpu Jungles" I’ve got a cool story behind this but it’s so long, I parked it in the Alt Text.
Southeast Asian Fantasy; a drawing of a man with outreached arms, summoning a beak-faced spirit in the act of pressing themself out from the ground. The spirit is surveying the offerings laid in front of it.Southeast Asian Fantasy; a drawing of a trader with 2 helpers and a water buffalo (pack animal).
One helper is placing goods by the jungle’s edge while the trader shouts towards the trees.
The other helper looks around warily.

This work is inspired by accounts about pandemics in Southeast Asian history.
Indigenous communities have long played an integral role in international trade, sourcing and supplying much sought after jungle produce such as resin, feathers, bezoar, etc.
During disease outbreaks, these communities retreated deep into the jungle, avoiding contact with traders.
Folks who wanted to trade could only leave their wares by the river/forest edge, returning the next day to find exchanged goods.
Such Imagination fuel!
1. The jungles here are mysterious and unknowable.
2. Did traders really know who they traded with?
3. The act feels more like offerings to the jungle, receiving blessings in return.
