Editorial: Join the party, Trail Blazers, and help get a deal done
The city and county are making progress on their commitment to help fund a Moda Center renovation, the editorial board writes. The Trail Blazers should rejoin discussions and help get a deal done.

Myself and Commissioner Brim-Edwards’ 9 amendments aim to right size the Moda deal. I want the Blazers to stay in Portland. I also want the County to continue providing services to residents who live here. My amendments work to strike that balance.

Moda Funding Should Not Result in Service Cuts: The County is facing $60m in cuts over the next 3 years. The “Chair’s Proposal” spends $35m on Moda, requiring cuts to essential services like SUN Schools and eviction prevention.

Meghan Moyer @multcomoyer.bsky.social · 23/07/2026
Right Sizing the Deal for the County: Unlike the City or the State, the County does not own or receive money from the Moda Center The City’s budget is double the County’s budget, but the “Chair’s Proposal” obligates $125m of County funds to the renovation, compared to the City’s proposal of $120m

The “Chair’s Proposal” is a blank check. I’m working to fix it by making sure the Moda deal is: 1) Right sized for the County 2) Does not cut County services

2) Under the current framework, the County will issue debt to give $53m to the Blazers upfront. My 2nd amendment requires the Blazers to cover the annual cost of the debt AND requires the Blazers to pay funds to school districts in MultCo.

The amendments: 1) Saves up to $36.6m to fund County operations instead of giving it to the #Blazers, so that we can continue providing key services like SUN Schools and eviction prevention. next amendment on next post ⬇️⬇️

I love the Blazers and I want to vote yes to help keep them in Portland.
But Multnomah County needs a fair deal — not a blank check.

Most NBA stadium renovations have some funding from the owners. This can be through variations of property taxes or through private funding commitments. www.ripcitynotripoff.com/deals has more info on this.

Yesterday, Multnomah County's budget passed with my amendment to fully restore all funding to SUN Schools. With families impacted by ICE, inflation, and reduced protections by the Trump admin, it is crucial we continue to provide services like SUN to support those in our community most impacted.

It is my sincere apology that those who live close to the ICE facility, including veterans and seniors, have been forced to endure the harm caused by the federal government's excessive and atrocious use of chemical munitions. #MultCoD1
Multnomah County monitoring air quality next to the ICE facility
Households living next to the ICE facility experience severe health impacts caused by use of chemical munitions. As a result, they:
• Need medical care
• Are unable to work
• Are unable to pay rent
This is not acceptable. While the County is limited in how we can restrict the federal government, we can and are collecting air quality data.
Data will become and remain available to everyone in June, including those seeking recourse against the federal government.

State policy contributes to mentally ill Oregonians falling into homelessness, Multnomah County says
A letter from five county commissioners urges state officials to change what they described as a discriminatory policy

I am working to build out the County’s ability to assist Oregonians experiencing mental illness and homelessness but need the State to allow us to access the programs only it can provide: long-term services and supports.

Oregon has one of the lowest rates of access to mental health treatment in the country. (Getty Images)

ICE Banned from County Property

Today, the Board passed my Sanctuary County amendment that extends the County’s ban on ICE presence to all County facilities, including parking lots.

ICE has no place in Multnomah County. The dangerous and deadly actions by ICE are a threat to our community.
