Finally saw Backrooms last night and I’m still mad about it!

This is a great looking movie with eerie vibes, incredible sets, and fantastic performances but GOD DAMN is it flimsy as hell story- and character-wise. There was absolutely no weight or depth to anything. No setups and payoffs, no catharsis, no real themes - not even a point of view

That said, Backrooms genuinely would have made for a great video game or immersive theatrical experience like Sleep No More, since you're the main character in those mediums so it still works if atmosphere is the only thing it has going for it

- Startpage is new to me - it scrapes both Google and Bing and so far it seems better than DuckDuckGo but worse than 2026 Google - &udm=14 is my current search engine of choice, as it’s just 2026 Google without the ads or AI slop. Plus they now have a browser extension! Any other recommendations?

Some thoughts on search engines that aren’t Google in 2026: - DuckDuckGo results aren’t great cuz it just scrapes Bing (unless you want articles criticizing Google, then it rules) - Kagi sometimes shows results on par with pre-enshittification Google, but it’s hit-or-miss and not worth the $ 1/2

Sure, but what I mean is that enshittification only “works” if your service is so popular that it’s basically a necessity with little-to-no alternative. That’s obviously the case with Google Search but not Door Dash and especially not Yelp, so I don’t get what those companies are thinking

I do! I use it every day — and apparently there’s also now an extension for Safari! I just don’t get how Yelp and Door Dash pulling the same shit would be profitable in their cases. I really wanted to order a steak tip salad to go just now, but both apps only gave me results for salads or steaks 🙃

The Trump admin has only labeled one AI company — Anthropic — a national security threat, and only because they’ve (correctly) opposed many military uses of their tech, supported Kamala Harris in 2024, etc. AFAK the Feds still have contracts with OpenAI, NVIDIA, and the other major AI companies
