The screenwriter purposely made abortion a load-bearing subplot so studio executives wouldn't be able to cut those scenes. That may have been a complicating factor.

Mind you, Brudnoy hung up on me and cut to commercial before my question aired, but it did seem to make an impression on him nonetheless. [on me too, because I lost all the respect I had in Brudnoy over this treatment.]

Not sure how well-known these names are outside Boston, but David Brudnoy reined in his defense of Mike Barnicle's journalistic failings, after I called his radio show to ask how he'd handle a student who did the same.

That last sentence - that students would be failed for doing the same - needs to be hammered home. It's an objective standard he failed to uphold.

It seems obvious that most shows will either be cut short too soon, or will go on waaay too long. A better question is what shows ended well? Resolved the story in a satisfying way and provided closure. Given the business of television, that's the rarity.

I was attending a reading (by Scalzi, actually), and noticed an audience member who looked naggingly familiar, but couldn't place his face. Then I overheard someone *else* pointing him out as Joe Hill. He looks an awful lot like his father.

One of the common explanations about the US is that the new field didn't yet have the gatekeeping of more established career tracks, such as commercial art. Once inside, they found jobs for their friends & family. But comic books were new everywhere, so is it a common pattern, or US-specific?
110
Ms. Lis @mslis.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
That's okay. One other question. The early comic book industry in the US was heavily Jewish, and tons has been written about why. Did other countries have similar demographic slants? Maybe not Jews, but other minorities dominating the market?

The most absolutely massive flex from the state fair exhibit. This quilt is made of 40 years of prize ribbons from various categories at the New Mexico State Fair won by Carol St. Clair Johnson. She also won a prize for this quilt.

satin ribbons

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.

But (a) Hitchhikers *began* as a radio show; the book came later. And (b) all the adaptations to other media (the tv show, the game, etc) were adapted *by* Douglas Adams himself.

Based on this thread, I'm starting to think that y'all are on the cusp of inventing Bistromathics. Solutions for polycules are more likely to work for couples & triads than starting from smaller sets and adding complexity. At the very least, there should be something ig-Nobel-worthy.

Food companies wanted deregulation. Now there are dozens of recalls across the country. Mining companies wanted deregulation. Now the black lung rate is at a 45-year high. Financial companies wanted deregulation. Now financial losses to fraud are the highest on record. Noticing a pattern?

"Reluctantly," a federal judge dismisses the Oath Keepers seditious conspiracy cases. Trump DOJ "excuses criminal acts that caused a centuries-long pillar of our democracy—the peaceful transfer of presidential power—to buckle." "The court cannot write a different ending," he adds. buff.ly/NvVKnaW
This is the last of the prosecutions seeking to hold accountable those responsible for the events of January 6. That book is now closed. Today’s epilogue diminishes the gravity of that day, denigrates the work of the prosecutors and law enforcement officers who secured these convictions, and excuses criminal acts that caused a centuries-long pillar of our democracy—the peaceful transfer of presidential power—to buckle. The court cannot write a different ending.

Douglas Adams & Mike Nesmith were close friends & collaborated on a Hitchhikers Guide film project. "The Porpoise Song" must've come up and I want to know how. Mere synchronicity or was it an influence? Alas, they're both dead, so unless they left notes, we'll never know. youtu.be/sb4LMEGQBSs
