Yes. Things have been put in place to make the wrong things hard (which is often a blocker to making the right things easy). It’s a design choice. And can be changed with Political and political will. But without the “Friction Fixers” it’s never going to happen. (And the FFs are collaborative folks)

IMHO it’s the vendor dependency and inability to be an “intelligent customer” that are the cornerstone of the argument for the NHS to develop alternatives.

Setting aside whether or not the tech works and whether or not they are abiding by their contractual data requirements, the reason for invoking the break clause is that the NHS has been “captured” by a vendor. What tech bros call a ‘moat’ is what the people inside it call a siege.

This was a great read (and I say that as someone who trained as a chemical engineer and works in and around the sector). Classic “wicked” problem where government choices can change the whole environment.

If you look at it through the lens of them always responding too late to the evidence, the indecision left them (over and over) with drastic responses that did too much unnecessary harm beyond the infection itself. We washed our hands. The government sat on theirs. It’s one error not a balance.

I find this is a really odd story - why should world class biomedical research improve life expectancy in UK? What is keep life expectancy flat are a range of structural issues - not access to the latest medical treatments. 1/4 news.sky.com/story/world-...

World-class UK medical research not delivering enough benefits for British people
The country's life sciences industry generated £146.9bn in turnover in 2023/24, but UK life expectancy has fallen, a new study has found.

Honestly think the algorithm reads too much into me pausing on a post in LI. It’s generally because I’m more interested in something happening off screen than that the post has captured my attention.

For Ofgem SIF Discovery: it’s a max £200k award. It seems like that deadline is reasonable? Especially as it’s on a cycle that runs 3 or 4 times a year. I’m not sure that belongs at spot number 3. Although it doesn’t undermine your wider point!

IMHO They’re trying to triage their way out of a supply/demand constraint by solving the wrong problem. If you need to see 50 people to find the person whose condition needs escalating, then stop trying to pick the “best” 25 people to see and start figuring out how to handle all 50 people quicker.

They’re a interesting contrast. The diagnosis in the pope’s document is so sharp, multi-faceted and considered in comparison. I didn’t have fan girling about the Pope’s hot take on AI on my bingo card but definitely the best thing I’ve read this week.

You’re right. Amazon commerce boycotters aren’t going to bring down Amazon. Similarly, losing 75% of writers probably won’t bring down independent bookshops. I think the really rubbish thing is that someone would tell you that you’re being a writer wrong because you sell via Amazon.

Helen Dawson @mshelendawson.bsky.social · 04/05/2026
You’re not wrong but also channelling money to independent bookshops also has a significant impact on them existing, even if it makes no difference to Bezos. Both things are true.

Yes, Swiss scientist Fritz Zwicky coined the term “dark matter” which is impressive, but he also coined the term “spherical bastard” to describe people who are bastards no matter which way you look at them, and I think that should be celebrated more.

As I understand it contracts are either indexed to the market or fixed quarterly, say. These industries are a squeezed middle of SMEs between large suppliers and large customers that they have limited negotiating power with.

I have tried and tried to find a better method. But now I lean into the way my brain works which is writing fragmented paragraphs then stepping back and rewriting it into some sort of overall coherence. Forking frustrating innit? Why do I end up doing a development edit when it’s just a newsletter??

An operational policy to stop pursuing trivial infractions could be implemented rapidly. Write off the “backlog” and divert resources into making a better design of system going forward. And maybe write some principles to guide decision making.
