simply wouldn't work. Yet research merit systems, funding, hiring and other academic conventions commonly value research higher than any of the other activities necessary for research to be done. That bugs me. (3/3)

but left research-grant-funded work only recently (~2.5 years) to work with research admin & research infrastructure. There are many other gray zones that also are academia-adjacent (software development, instrument building, publishing, teaching, infrastructure ...) without which academia (2/n)

To me, that often reads as an attempt to draw firm lines between "us" [real researchers] and "them" [less devoted, failed researchers] when in reality there are gray zones. I left *active research* 20 years ago (1/n)
