I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.

I would personally put it in at least the top 10. It sits at the intersection of ‘systemic problems require systemic solutions’ and ‘no seriously, fuck that fascist weirdo’, which a good place to look for solutions imo.

There’s this idea that you need to engage seriously with everything anyone says, and I just don’t think that’s true. There’s too many people saying things, it’s reasonable and indeed necessary to have a ‘this guy is a crank, next’ filter.

If Chinese companies don’t want to sign on to the ‘stop losing money’ agreement, you simply have your pet regulators to ban them from the US market while mumbling about national security. Or get DoD to fund your training to ‘win the AI race’.

That’s why they need government to intervene - if they can make it illegal/too difficult for new competitors to offer a better product, they can all agree to slow development of new models enough for the existing ones to earn out. (Assuming inference actually is a profitable & big enough market)

Ian McLean @mrthewalrus.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I’m still not sure what they hope to gain by delaying. The public isn’t getting any more excited about data centers, and they themselves are saying they should (be forced to) stop improving the product, so what’s supposed to be different next year?

Thread - this framing is one I think more folks should default to as they talk about what the big tech companies. They talk a lot about values and mission and The Future, but what they actually do is almost always what you’d predict from looking at the incentives inherent in their business models.

Ian McLean @mrthewalrus.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I’ve been following along as people try to make local coding models work, and the current state of the art appears to be ‘you need a machine that costs $12k and is back-ordered into 2028 and can then wait too long for output that is barely usable’. It will get there, but maybe not for a while.

I have been trying to convince product managers of this for years. Hasn’t worked yet. I say ‘it should be opt-in’ and they say ‘you mean the notifications are on by default’ and I say no, and they just kind of look at me, baffled, like I suggested mailing the user an ostrich.

Yep. A lot of the rich white dudes in charge were only ever pretending to care about diversity and racism and not sexually harassing their employees. They also assumed that basically everyone else was also pretending, and would be happy to stop. I’m glad they were wrong.

Okay so @defector.com has had an odd glitch since the site redesign a couple of weeks back where the wrong photo and headline are often put together on the main page and I was going to ask them about fixing it but this just happened and as far as I'm concerned they have to leave it as is.
Screenshot for a Defector podcast episode with the headline "Consider the Emotional Lives of Scallops" only the accompanying photo is a white gormless stubbled red-headed UK singer of recent notoriety giving a flat smile to the camera while wearing a washed out peach top as beige as he is against a flat background. So, actually, probably a scallop anyway.
