I walked in for my usual lookee-here-the-big-boss-wants-his-money-and-he-wants-it-today haircut yesterday and my ancient Italian barber literally said, "Hiya boys! I'm off to the hospital for open heart surgery!" and handed me off to the awkward bear barber, who gave me the tightest skin fade ever.

While I'm still mourning the loss of Fred last week, it truly has been nice not to have her standing on my chest and loudly meowing, starting at 4:30 am, to demand food. Ruby, on the other hand, has always been more of a "Hey you just go about your business I'll wake up when I wake up" kind of gal.

I was aware of Shirley MacLaine from a very young age because she was born in my Northside neighborhood in Richmond. It was the kind of neighborhood that would never, ever shut up about it, though the family lived there only briefly. But hey, listen to this excellent podcast, already!

I’ve loved the Fire Emblem games for forever and don’t want to admit the number of hours I put into Three Houses. That said, I started Fortune’s Weave last week, ran into an almost immediate roadblock on Leda the Guitar Lady’s story (do not recommemd) that made me drop the game all this week.

Today we had to say goodbye to Fred, with whom we were privileged to share a home for nineteen years. She was a sweet and affectionate girl, despite being a terrible mouser, an extraordinary wrecker of Christmas trees, and a hardcore bonito flake addict.

Look, Practical Magic 2 (2026) isn’t going to convert skeptics into loving the previous flick as wholeheartedly and irrationally as I do, but I enjoyed the warm camaraderie of its cast and it manages to be similar in tone.

My parents started teaching me the fundamentals of contract bridge when I was only 10 years old. Their reasoning, since bridge was so popular in their youth, was when I got to college, I'd be such a marvel at the game that every pretty girl on campus would beg to be my partner.

I suspect a literary pedigree won’t sell tickets to “Virginia Woolf’s Night & Day” (2026), a harmless, lightly engaging period bonbon about a lady astronomer. But you’ll consider going when I tell you it’s the latest Lily Allen/Jennifer Saunders vehicle, right? With a cute dog?

Of all descendants of the iconic Girls Trip (2017), Spa Weekend (2026) is the palest—in every sense of the adjective. Its fitfully amusing script errs by telling everything and showing nothing save naked expanses of he-man abs. (But there are a lot of abs, for those into that kind of thing.)
Leslie Mann, Isla Fisher, Michelle Buteau, and Anna Faris live it up in white robes on the promotional poster for Spa Weekend (2026).

Between Suzette Charles's eponymous PWL project, Belvedere Kane's PWL-adjacent Such Trying Times, and Sheena Easton's just-released Shockwave, 2026 is bumper year for decades-old shelved albums to see light of day. The first two are great! I get why Sheena's company balked at her dud, though.

One of my favorite Tim Curry projects was the TV series Earth 2 (1994), an Amblin science fiction effort so dire that Steven Spielberg removed his name from the credits. The show wasn't great, but Tim Curry understood the memo to camp it up as its sneering Dr. Zachary Smith-like villain.

Jacob Elordi could never be as sad a Sad Boy as Dominic Sessa in Tony (2026), a refreshing film about the young Anthony Bourdain's Provincetown summer that allows silences to do much of the storytelling. With Antonio Banderas, who might as well be wearing a tee reading HOT DADDY in every scene.

I have a Tim Curry story! Picture it: Detroit, 1988. I'm a young grad student approaching the Institute of Arts. The door opens and hits me in the forehead, sending me sprawling. "Oh dear," says a familiar voice. "Are you quite all right?" "Tim Curry!" say I. He's in town, touring Me & My Girl.
