This can be applied to all aspects of T&L –consolidating prior knowledge, modelling, practice, scaffolding, feedback, retrieval practice, questioning and more.

For explanations, this can be achieved through introducing more complex content and ‘wider’ content and introducing the content in wider chunks.
100
Jade Pearce @mrspearce.bsky.social · 24/02/2025
Increased challenge is needed if the content is relatively simple, if we think our pupils are likely to grasp it easily when planning lessons, of if checking for understanding during the lesson demonstrates high levels of understanding.
100
Jade Pearce @mrspearce.bsky.social · 24/02/2025
For explanations, this can be provided by repeating explanations, simplifying explanations, breaking the explanation into smaller chunks, and providing more or different examples, non-examples and additional graphics.

Jade Pearce @mrspearce.bsky.social · 24/02/2025
Increased support is needed if the content is complex, if we think our pupils are likely to struggle to fully comprehend the content when planning our lessons, of if checking for understanding during the lesson demonstrates learning gaps or misconceptions.

Jade Pearce @mrspearce.bsky.social · 24/02/2025
For example, characteristics of effective explanations for all pupils include clarity, chunking, examples and non-examples, linking to prior knowledge, q’s for listening and rehearsal, graphics and analogies…

3. Providing additional challenge if the material is simple or if learners are likely to or do grasp the content easily.
100
Jade Pearce @mrspearce.bsky.social · 24/02/2025
How? Adaptive teaching involves three aspects: 1.Ensuring you are using the evidence-informed techniques that are most effective for all learners. 2.Providing additional support if the material being covered is complex or if learners are likely to or do struggle to fully grasp the content…

Jade Pearce @mrspearce.bsky.social · 24/02/2025
… and following the lesson when they decide which pupils may need further support or if it is necessary to reteach or revisit any content.

Jade Pearce @mrspearce.bsky.social · 24/02/2025
When? Adaptive teaching takes place during lesson planning when teachers consider how easily they think pupils may grasp a new concept or skill and how complex this new content is, during the lesson when they flexibly adapt their instruction based on the learning taking place…
110
Jade Pearce @mrspearce.bsky.social · 24/02/2025
What? Adaptive teaching occurs when teachers adapt their instruction to meet the needs of all learners.

Adaptive teaching: A Thread… Adaptive teaching is crucial to high quality, inclusive education that enables pupils to achieve success. So, what is adaptive teaching, when does it take place and how can it be implemented?

Another great session with @aimeetinkler.bsky.social for Coventry MAT, this time on introducing new content: -Explanations that build on and explicitly link to pupils' prior knowledge - Questioning for listening, rehearsal and understanding during explanations -Use of graphics, examples 1/

Desirable difficulties in action by @mrspearce.bsky.social & Isaac Moore is just such a superb book. So clear, so succinct. It's too pithy to be able to easily summarise here, so today & tomorrow just two particular highlights: Today: five principles of learning #edpsychs #edusky
Cover image of book: Desirable Difficulties in ActionSummary of Pearce & Moore's five principles of learning:
We learn only when we pay attention and think hard
Our working memory is limited when we learn something new
What we know determines what we learn and how quickly we learn
Fluency arises through practice over time
There is a relationship between learning and forgetting

I would also add that for pupils who have got the answer correct it might be beneficial set a more challenging question for them to complete at the same time. 👍🏻

A nice blog. I especially like the point on responding to incorrect answers: 1. Explain it again 2. Ask a similar question to check understanding 3. Ask a similar question next week and in homework. Thanks, Jo!

7. Tasks that increase in complexity and eventually require pupils to apply their learning to unfamiliar scenarios. Again, nothing new and lots of what teachers do already. Just a reminder and my contribution to some of the brilliant work being shared on this platform already ☺️

Jade Pearce @mrspearce.bsky.social · 17/08/2024
6. Tasks that require pupils to think hard about the content. This includes the removal of tasks that do not require pupils to think hard about the content such as copying down text or simple questions/tasks only.
110
Jade Pearce @mrspearce.bsky.social · 17/08/2024
5. Tasks that ensure the required depth of thinking. E.g. If the aim is for pupils to compare and contrast two concepts, they are specifically asked to explain similarities and differences. If the learning objective requires pupils to explain a concept, tasks/qs that require elaboration are set.
110
Jade Pearce @mrspearce.bsky.social · 17/08/2024
4. Conversely, when the aim is to develop a skill, the task should use content pupils are already familiar with in order to prevent cognitive overload and ensure pupils are able to focus on the skill they are developing.
