New this week, my Much Ado About Numbers website which celebrates the links between maths, Shakespeare and Elizabethan history. Do have a go at the quiz - can you score more than 3 out of 10? Here's the website. Enjoy! www.muchadoaboutnumbers.co.uk cc @mathsjem.bsky.social

#ALevelMaths #MathsToday Find the exact value of the green area.
The ellipse 9x²-4xy+6y²=10 is shown in red, together with a circle, centre (0, 0) which is inside the ellipse and touches it at two points. The set of points inside the ellipse but outside the circle is shaded green.

#ALevelMaths Looking at iterative solutions to equations today, so I wrote this root finder in @desmos.com, utilising the Newton-Raphson method. r(a, n) uses n iterations starting at x=a to identify a root. #MathsToday www.desmos.com/calculator/4...

In #MathsToday, Year 13 Further Maths had a lesson in the morning to revise for an afternoon Core Pure 1 assessment. I printed off a nice double-sided A3 revision mat. There's something about that format that I find feels more approachable than 50 questions in a list! interwovenmaths.com/mats/cp1

Normal approximation to the binomial distribution in #ALevelMaths #MathsToday, and I wrote this question as an example of why we might use it in these days of fancy calculators with binomial distribution functions: If X~B(n, 0.4), find the least value of n such that P(X >= 200) > 0.1.

We're taking on one or two more tutors. If you teach A Level Maths and fancy some online tutoring alongside it, have a look. Any questions feel free to ask.

Ok, but if you choose "List" rather than "Marksheet" to look at each question from a single task, can you filter that if the task has been set to multiple groups?

If you set a task to multiple classes on @drfrostmaths.bsky.social is it possible to filter the results in the "list" view to look at individual classes?

In #mathstoday #Alevelmaths yr 1 did hidden quadratics and filled in the blanks with this resource from Swinton maths, yr 2 found intersections of modulus graphs mostly adapting examples taken from the dr frost slides - my new A3 MWBs, fine tip pens and board rubbers got lots of use 😀

Complex numbers practice in L6 #FurtherMaths #ALevelMaths #MathsToday.
Two questions: a quadratic equation and a pair of simultaneous equations where the coefficients are complex.

They are:

1. Solve (1-2i)z^2-(3+4i)z-9+13i=0

2. Solve (2+i)z+(4-i)w=21-i and (1+3i)z+(2+5i)w=12+18i

In #MathsToday, I did some Mathematical Gettier Questions with Y8 and Y13. Mathematical Gettier Questions are tasks that explore how incorrect methods sometimes give correct answers. Explained in more detail here: interwovenmaths.com/mathematical... What ideas can you think of for similar tasks?
Simplifying Fractions: Mathematical Gettier Question showing Ellie incorrectly simplifying 12/24 to 1/4 by cancelling the digit 2. Students explain the error, find a fraction where the method works, and test the claim that it works for 49/98.Simplifying Fractions – Sorting: Students sort 12 fractions according to whether Ellie’s digit-cancelling method does not work, partially works, or fully works.Double Angle Formula: Mathematical Gettier Question showing Ramona incorrectly assuming cos 2θ = 2 cos θ, giving 6/5 when cos θ = 3/5. Students find the correct answer, explain why 6/5 is impossible, and determine when her method would work.

I've just added the Algebraic Identities / Comparing Coefficients / Algebraic Fractions tasks I made back in 2022 to interwovenmaths.com/algebraic-id... My favourite part is these discussions, where [spoilers] you can show that 42 and 9 are in fact the only options, each with a nice interpretation.
Two algebraic fraction identities labelled a and b, asking which is easier. The coefficients 42 in a and 9 in b are highlighted in purpleTwo follow-up algebraic fraction identities labelled c and d. Question c asks why the identity with 14 highlighted is impossible; question d asks which other values of the highlighted coefficient d are possible.
