Had a top-notch evening at Finsbury Park Picturehouse for a preview of Doug Weir’s fabulous new 4K restoration of MADNESS: TAKE IT OR LEAVE it, followed by an entertaining and illuminating Q&A with Madness’s Suggs and Mike, hosted by the BFI’s inimitable Vic Pratt. @vicpratt.bsky.social

Glorious night at BFI - The Wrong Box is so funny, so Wildean, so 60s - and it was magnificent to hear it introduced by Nanette Newman, who, unbelievably, is 92. The Forbes centenary season has been a triumph for its curator Jo Botting.

I saw him in the flesh in July 2017. The hair had gone, but he was still unmistakably Peter Wingarde. I thought at the time he was 90 or nearing it, but by your reckoning only 88. He died a few months later, still preparing new projects.

The perils of the solo traveller. So many times I have ordered a meal in a pub only to find a family of four sitting at the table on my return. The Wetherspoons app adequately deals with that peril. My advice, remove the bags and sit there anyway. You have already paid so have priority.

ROME EXPRESS (Walter Forde, 1932). All aboard! This delightful, tightly plotted train film feels like a stylistic dry run for THE LADY VANISHES (1938) as a variety of colourful characters travel from Paris to Rome on the titular Express. A stolen painting drives the plot here, >> (1/2) #FilmSky

Superb introduction to Rome Express at BFI last night thanks to season Curator Kazuo Ishiguro and the great Jonathan Coe. Never seen the film, blown away by its thoroughly realised ambition (better use of models than even Hitchcock) and superb direction frome ex-silent clown Walter Forde. A joy.
