With such a broad archive of Network releases, a lot are sadly very hard to find. To help fill that gap we stock a range of pre-loved refurbished DVDs and blu-rays. We recently added 65 pre-loved titles on NetworkOnAir, with the next batch set to drop any day now. networkonair.com/351-pre-loved

#BOTD Ronnie Barker. Astoundingly prolific as both a writer and comic actor, he is beloved for his roles in Porridge, Open All Hours, The Navy Lark and so much more. But he down turned some big roles too, like Reginald Perrin, Victor Meldrew and Claudius in I Claudius.

#BOTD the multi-talented Anthony Newley. We know and love him for Gurney Slade, but he’s known to millions as the writer of Feeling Good, sung by Nina Simone, What Kind of Fool Am I, sung by Sammy Davis Jnr., and as co-composer of the score for Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.

Born on this day: Herbert Charles Angelo Kuchačevič ze Schluderpacheru, more succinctly known as Herbert Lom. Known for playing suave criminals and authority figures, he was also the first person to play the King of Siam in the original West End production of The King and I.

Edwin Astley composed some of TV’s most beloved theme tunes, including The Saint, The Baron, and Danger Man. But did you know he was once father-in-law to The Who’s Pete Townshend? Townshend married his daughter Karen in 1968. Astley is grandfather to their daughter, journalist Emma Townshend.

In the second part of our look at the later musical projects of Powell & Pressburger, Powell searches for his first project after the partnership ends, and settles on Honeymoon - part travelogue, part remake of The Red Shoes. It doesn’t go to plan, but the ending is worth waiting for.

One of Sir Tony Robinson’s early screen roles was opposite John Wayne. In the movie Brannigan, Robinson plays a courier who throws a bag allegedly full of money into the Thames. An unhappy Wayne promptly throws Robinson into the river to swim and fetch it back. Photo: Emma Hickox, CC BY-SA 4.0

Researchers for The Sweeney would hang around pubs close to New Scotland Yard so they could listen to real Flying Squad officers talk off-duty after they’d had a few. This is where classic lines like ‘Get your trousers on, you’re nicked’ came from.

Born on this day in 1923 - Richard 'Dickie' Attenborough. Did you know that he was the first actor to play Detective Sergeant Trotter in the record-breaking, long running play, The Mousetrap, in 1952? His wife, Sheila Sim, played Mollie Ralston, and they got 10% of the profits for appearing.

Born on this day: Peter Wyngarde. Or was he? Like the real King, the man who was Jason King has more than one birthday! Some sources place it on 23rd August, others the 28th, somewhere between 1927 and 1929. Wyngarde himself wasn’t sure, but recent research suggests 28/08/1928 is most likely.

Fans of Powell and Pressburger will remember their musical classics 'The Red Shoes' and 'The Tales of Hoffmann', but what about their later musical adventures? In the first of a two part feature we look at one of their lesser-known creations, 'Oh... Rosalinda!!'. networkonair.com/blog/post/...

Very sad news that Tim Curry passed away yesterday at the age of 80. Before Hollywood got hold of him there was Hair in the West End, the Royal Shakespeare Company, and of course his gleeful turn as Frank-N-Furter with an accent "like the queen".

Although Tommy Cooper was a good magician who pretended to be a bad one, he was certainly capable of making mistakes. On an episode of Parkinson, he forgot to set the safety catch on his prop guillotine. Had it not been for a vigilant floor manager, Parky might’ve lost his head…

Callan gave British television its least glamorous spy. Edward Woodward played him for four series and never once made him likeable, which was sort of the point Our bundle combines Callan: The Colour years with 'Under the Red File', Andrew Pixley's definitive history networkonair.com/all-produc...

Anthony Newley's 1960 series baffled its audience so completely that ATV shifted it out of the primetime time slot after two episodes. Sixty-odd years on, it looks like it was at least twenty years before its time. And on HD Blu-ray it never looked better!

Bill Oddie, 1941–2026. Different generations remember this special man for different things: comedian, actor, wildlife presenter and more. For most of us he was a Goodie. He co-wrote The Goodies, wrote most of the music, and played the short grumpy one with good humour. Thank you, Bill.
Promotional black and white photograph of the three Goodies posing together and smiling.
