yeah, to clarify, my point is that Pokemon fans are fan of Pokemon, not of the idea of "capturing creatures". far as i know, they only play Pokemon not Cassette Beasts or other things in that genre I've seen Pokemon fans *really* angry at Palworld for example

addendum, regarding the (deep sigh) "Malfoid" phenomenon "lol, like genderbent characters are a new thing" for most of HP fans it is. and again, the volume and zeitgeist are the point, the fact a huge mass of people is loving it "why not [female witch from other franchise]" because it's not HP

Another useful comparison: if any "traditional industry" had seen job losses comparable to the UK games industry in the last few years, it'd be treated as a national crisis on the front of every newspaper for months and months, because those are considered Proper Jobs and making games is not.

This gets said constantly, but it worth reiterating: Games Workshop being bigger than fishing is important to shout about because you wouldn't know it from government talking points, which are rarely about anything creative or artistic. Growth won't involve fish or steel, it will involve goblins.

i was a shy nerdy kid who got into HP and it was one of the few times something i was really into was popular among all kids as school. it felt so, so unique *that* is the feeling HP adults are trying to replicate and no amount of nichely popular anime can measure up to it

Ursula K. Le Guin is an incredible author. one of the most beautiful prose writers i've ever read. a brilliant mind, and an inquisitive one at that, all characteristic That One Author can't even hope to match up to but you can't open Twitter and be served a flood of Earthsea fanart

it's kinda like Pokemon in a sense. people who are really into HP aren't into it because they like fantasy or reading, they're into it because it's HP it's the... "community" isn't the right word. it's the zeitgeist aspect, it's about it being a big thing everyone's into that you can partake in

some thoughts on Harry Potter as someone who was really into it as a kid then grew up the problem with a lot of discourse on HP, to me, is that a lot of people take the angle of "i understand this is important to you, so here's other books/franchises you can get into instead" that's not gonna work

if you reboot Halo you're either gonna make something that isn't Halo, something that's Halo plus a whole lot of unnecessary fluff that makes it not feel like Halo, or just Halo again and you can't make Halo again because it feels too simple in this day and age. even if that's exactly its strength

hell, additional thought, i remember hearing the devs talk about how for Halo 1 they created every single weapon to fit a specific role in the combat (sniper long range, shotgun close quarters, needler behind corners...) and already in Halo 2 they had a hard time figuring out what else to add to it

heck, that game had to add *a second type of sticky grenade* and that's where i started to feeling it was reaching its natural end Bungie was right in wanting MC to die in the ending then came Halo with a sprint button, or Halo with a grappling hook. both feel so... not-Halo to me
