I do so hate it when Lego instructions get complicated.
An instruction in a Lego model book that demands a single adobe coloured tile. It does not depict any action required; just that the tile exists.

See that? It's a warning about just one of the many perils of allowing oneself to fall into alcoholism. £352 of CapitalOne's money to repair (OLED touchscreen). What impressed me about the experience was DHL. Devon to Chechia, and then Chechia back to Devon? Less than 24h each way. Credit where due.

"Treats", a story in three alts.
The back end of a cat as it stands between me and what I'm trying to do, as part of an ongoing campaign of walking all over me, digging her claws into my legs, and headbutting me in the face. This is her way of letting me know she has no had any treats today. The same cat, consuming the required treats under the table. The nest of wires is nothing to do with me.Having consumed her treats, the fickle feline is now curled up on the settee, ignoring everyone.

See that white thing? That's UPS we bought for the DVR a couple of weeks ago; random but frequent power cuts kept killing off recordings. Some of them were Repair Shop, which was fine, but it screwed with the cricket, too. So, £50 later, UPS in place. Not a single fucking 𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘵 of a power cut since.

The email this prompted me to send to the FT.
Dear Sirs,

You have gained a reputation for conducting fair, balanced, well researched journalism. You are also the most expensive daily subscription paper by far. I appreciate this is due to your target audience being able to write off their subscriptions against tax, and I appreciate you offer discounts to students and access via institutional subscriptions.

This still makes your fair, unbiased reporting completely inaccessible to low income households. A web search suggests you add ~250 articles a day, but few people are able or inclined to read that many.

Why not let us pay for a fixed number of articles per month? For £10 I get 5 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘵 editions of Private Eye delivered to my door. Even without the humour, that's a cost I can justify for the journalistic content alone. Why can't I, and people like me, pay you £10 for online access to something like 50 articles, of our choosing, per month?

I actively want to give you money to read your content, but you've priced me out of the market.

Anyway, I don't actually expect you to care. It's just frustrating when someone like Baron Prem Sikka shares one of your articles and I have no way to read it.

Regards,

Phil Hare

Text in alt.
Russia, 1946, the Nazis recently defeated. Stalin gathers half a dozen of the top Soviet science fiction authors in a dacha in the countryside somewhere. Convinced that the defeat of America is only a few years away, and equally convinced that the Soviet Union needs a massive external threat to hold it together, to give it purpose and direction, he tells the writers: 'I want you to concoct a story about aliens poised to invade earth ... I want it to be massively detailed, and completely believable. If you need props and evidence to back it up, then we can create them. But when America is defeated, your story must be so convincing that the whole population of Soviet Russia believes in it - the population of the whole world!' The little group of writers gets down to the task and spends months working on it.

But then new orders come from Moscow: they are told to drop the project; Stalin has changed his mind; forget everything about it. So they do. They get on with their lives in their various ways; some of them survive the remainder of Stalin's rule, the changes of the 50s and 60s. And then, in the aftermath of Chernobyl, the survivors gather again, because something strange has started to happen. The story they invented in 1946 is starting to come true ...

A typically mind-blowing SF novel from one of the genre's literary stars.
