While I mostly agree with this view, I do believe that complicated things are inherently suspicious, in a world that has lost the social mechanisms to establish trust in technical experts. If only a tiny minority can judge if some technology is risky, and that minority is split into factions […]

My "The Garbage Time of History" just came out in *The Battleground*. "As Beijing and Washington struggle for soft power, China experts are seeing a 'vibe shift'. . . ." thebattleground.eu/2026/09/30/the-g…

The Garbage Time of History
Is the reason China’s rise or America’s fall? As Beijing and Washington struggle for soft power, China experts are seeing a “vibe shift”. Online media frequently contrast China’s rapid advancement in technology and infrastructure with perceived decline in the United States and other Western nations. China’s ascendance has been breathtaking. It’s not the same place as when I first studied in Beijing in 1986. Then, bicycles filled the streets. Now more than 40 Chinese cities have metro systems far more modern than any American city. Might the United States, conversely, be in “garbage time”? This concept has made a round trip from the US to China and back. The term “garbage time” comes from American sports. It describes the final minutes of a blowout game, when the winner’s lead is too great to overcome. The term is used in basketball and football — sports with a fixed game clock. During garbage time, coaches substitute bench warmers for star players, reducing the quality of play. Are nations or civilisations subject to such time limits? Does it make sense to talk about the “garbage time of history”? How might this notion affect understandings of nations, culture and personal responsibility? Might it apply to humanity in the face of the climate crisis? Or facing the existential risk that AI may destroy humanity? The trope “garbage time of history” (历史的垃圾时间) initially appeared in September 2023 on the Chinese social media platform WeChat. In “Garbage Time of History: Culture’s Long Vacation”, the essayist Hu Wenhui used the phrase to characterise the period when nothing can prevent an empire’s ultimate collapse. A newspaper editor in Guangzhou, in the world’s largest megalopolis, Hu carefully avoided any reference to contemporary China. The Soviet Union, Hu’s essay begins, fell into garbage time after Brezhnev’s 1979 invasion of Afghanistan. Gorbachev, he continues, simply “expedited the end”. Hu also applies the concept to the long periods of decline in China’s Zhou, Tang, Ming and Qing Dynasties. For Hu, when political systems stall, culture can still flourish in a long, quiet “vacation”. Distinguishing the vastness of history from the individual’s insignificance, Hu invokes a Confucian maxim: “When the Way prevails under Heaven, show yourself; when the Way does not prevail, hide.” During history’s garbage time, the individual may be politically powerless, yet still enjoy freedom of expression in the personal and cultural realms. Citing examples of great Chinese writers who lived during periods of historical garbage time, Hu concludes, “History is vast, yet life is fleeting; it must never be squandered. History may have its ‘garbage time’—but human life does not.” In July 2024, “garbage time of history” went viral as Chinese netizens used the phrase to express pessimism about China’s future. An aggressive state-backed clampdown swiftly followed. Joining the government’s pushback against “garbage time”, the Beijing Daily––the official organ of the CCP’s municipal Propaganda Department––dismissed the idea as a “false proposition not worth refuting”. Other critics called it a “logical fallacy”, a “false academic concept”, or a “narrative trap”. Censors deleted Hu Wenhui’s original article and scrubbed mentions of garbage time from social and other media. Inside China’s firewall, only authorised rebuttals remain. To avoid automated filters, netizens now avoid typing the precise phrase, but the trope still has currency. “Garbage time of history” recalls earlier influential memes expressing cynicism about China. The stakes of containing discontent have long been high. In September 2020, netizens popularised the term “involution” (内卷, literally “rolling inward”) to describe relentless striving for diminishing benefit. Amidst gruelling, zero-sum competition, the term suggests that people work harder and harder but achieve fewer rewards. The term went viral after a video circulated online showing a student working on his laptop while riding a bicycle at the elite Tsinghua University campus. In 2021, another meme, “lying flat” (躺平) grew into a subculture. In April, former factory worker Luo Huazhong posted “Lying Flat is Righteous”, an online manifesto about quitting the rat race and living minimally. On the 3rd of June, the musician Zhang Busan posted a satirical video, “Lying Flat Is the Way of the King”. Clad in shorts and a baseball cap, Zhang lay on a couch strumming his guitar to critique China’s “996” work culture. (9 a.m. to 9 p.m. six days a week.) Within 24 hours, state censors wiped the video from multiple platforms, only for it to resurface on YouTube. “Lying Flat” was a response to involution. Instead of burning out at work, young people could reject societal expectations to marry, buy property, and get ahead professionally. The movement still speaks to youth who renounce the heated pursuit of status, money, possessions, and the “Chinese Dream“. As cynicism deepened, in the spring of 2022, lying flat evolved into “let it rot” (摆烂). Basketball fans in China first coined the phrase to riff on the American word “tanking”, when a team deliberately loses games to receive a better draft pick for the next season. Frustrated by seemingly unattainable goals, netizens popularised “let it rot” as a mantra for embracing decay and giving up. The “let it rot” meme in China has an echo in “bed rotting”, American Gen Z’s shorthand for spending hours in bed awake, often while scrolling on digital devices. Like “let it rot”, for some, bed rotting resists “hustle culture” in the interest of self-care. In each of these cases, the Chinese government responded not only with censorship but also with articles criticising the terms and those who use them. (These responses may have amplified the terms’ popularity.) Disaffected citizens continue to use or allude to the catchphrases to express discouragement about high youth unemployment, precarious and poorly paid work, the burst of the housing market bubble, and other economic and social challenges. Debates about “garbage time of history” have been fierce in China, where it is part of a broader Sinopessimism. More to the government’s liking, critics there have also applied the concept to the United States. In July 2024, during the meme’s viral peak, the financial news and information service Sina Finance featured an article applying the concept to the US. For the author, more than two decades of draining warfare in the Middle East, the 2007 subprime mortgage crisis, and the 2008 financial crisis signalled the failure of neoliberalism and the end of America’s “golden age”. The article’s title evokes the United States’ long tradition of political violence: “Gunshots Ring Out, America Has Entered Historical Garbage Time”. But its focus is on the devolution of electoral politics into hate politics, the concentration of wealth and worsening plight of the poor, and America’s decline in economic, technological, and industrial competitiveness. The article argues that structural weaknesses belie the illusion that America’s difficulties might be merely temporary. Endless “ballot-box politics” under capitalism inevitably squander resources. The military-industrial complex stokes conflicts around the globe, further draining the nation’s strength. US political and business elites, the article reiterates, have colluded to control the executive, legislative, and judicial powers, as well as the media: “They have reduced the state apparatus to a mere instrument serving their interests.” The ultra-rich are devouring an ever larger share of the pie, aggravating extreme poverty and leading to a surge in populism and the rise of Trump. Another major fault line is America’s declining investment in infrastructure and education. The article does not offer concrete examples, but they are easy to find. For one, China operates more than 50,000 kilometres of high-speed rail, while the US and the UK struggle with massive delays, high costs, and limited networks. The “US-instigated” great-power rivalry with China is accelerating America’s collapse and disintegration. Despite serious domestic challenges, the US government has chosen confrontation rather than cooperation with China. In this narrative, China has been compelled to push back against American hegemony in self-defence. More ready to survive uncertainties and a new world disorder, China is navigating a “hot peace” in which a Pax Sinica is replacing a crumbling Pax Americana. The _Sina Finance_ article closes with a dire prediction. Unlike China, with its successive dynasties, the Roman Empire, once it fell, wasn’t reborn, and the West entered the Middle Ages. The article predicts that the US-led West may well fall into another 500-1,000 years of Middle Ages, lagging behind the East. I hesitated to write this article. The garbage time of history could be a dangerous concept. It could encourage fatalism and passivity. The climate crisis may offer the most literal instantiation of historical garbage time. Capitalism’s economic model built on infinite growth is colliding with a planet of finite resources. Might we have reached a tipping point as we burn through the remaining “minutes” of ecological stability? Rather than despairing that the die is cast, we need to implement mitigation strategies. Climate change is not a binary win/lose game, but a continuum of consequences. Tropes such as garbage time offer neat narratives, but they disregard the contingent nature of history. History rarely has time limits, and it does not move linearly toward a fixed, inevitable conclusion. Acknowledging a ticking clock might spur action and change. Adaptation could still influence outcomes. For the West, avoiding garbage time depends on reckoning with the “tsunami of transformation coming from China”. China is no longer catching up, but leading in many areas of development. Could late-stage capitalism be in garbage time? How sustainable is rampant financialisation, enshittification, stagnant wages, and soaring cost of living? Most urgently, might the AI race have led capitalism into garbage time? Existential threats loom large. In China, experts also worry that the government’s massive investment in AI may hurt the economy. AI is displacing both white-collar and blue-collar jobs, accelerating a recession and downgrading quality of life. At the US-China summit last week, Presidents Trump and Xi made clear their differing views on AI safety and purpose. Dismissing the need for guardrails, Trump says the US “totally rejects any attempt to construct a globalist scheme” on AI. Xi maintains that the two nations must “ensure that the development of AI is always under human control and serves the well-being of the people”. Belief in garbage time can be a rationale for the excesses of late-stage capitalism. If the United States is in garbage time, corporations have no disincentive to put profits above the public good and human safety. Xi’s insistence that China and the US “manage AI for good” refutes such resignation to garbage time. I’ve unpacked the concept of garbage time to highlight these stakes. I don’t believe in historical garbage time, and I don’t believe that tech billionaires and oil oligarchs have won the game against the rest of us. _Photograph courtesy ofFernanda Japa. Varför blir det här en så stor historia när evidensen är så svag och andra liknande fall ignorerats? En hypotes är att den underblåser narrativet att valresultatet är illegitimt – en tes som SD, M och KD med Åkesson i spetsen drivit och som medierna inte borde elda på utan väldigt goda grunder.

Normalized Fascism in Open Source: $12 Million Given to DHH
I'm somebody who's written rather extensively on generative AI ethics, and I feel there is a lot that is unethical about the current corporate climate and culture surrounding the technology. And when I write about LLMs and chatbots, I'm careful not to make judgments about the people using the end products—I don't think you're a bad person if you use ChatGPT or Claude, or whatever. What I'm discussing today is different. There is no room for debate or argument, here—only hard, absolute lines in the sand. Much of the world has become far too complacent and complicit with people (and their companies) who proclaim and hold far-right, fascist ideology. These are not image boards residing in the fringe corners of an anonymous Internet made up of people who have slipped through the cracks. No, these are wealthy people in power who are blatant and shameless in their support for those who continuously beat the drum of bigotry, xenophobia, transphobia, and cynical accelerationist hatred. Open source technology has become a culture safe for this rhetoric and ideology, with millions of dollars being invested to continue this status quo. You need to be made aware of this, and then you need to be vocal and take action. ## DHH David Heinemeier Hansson is the most well-known figurehead here. He is the creator of Ruby on Rails, CTO of 37signals, and a Shopify board member. In September 2025, DHH published "As I remember London", mourning that London is "no longer full of native Brits"—a claim that redefines "native Brit" to mean "white." Developer Jake Lazaroff details how DHH describes a Tommy Robinson march as "heartwarming," where speakers called for "remigration" (a euphemism for the ethnic cleansing of non-white residents) and one speaker demanded that countries "ban halal," "ban mosques," and "ban temples." DHH invokes abuse scandals to bolster his white-nationalist rhetoric, framing non-white men as predators of "British girls," while UK data shows no such racial skew. LibreNews reaches the same conclusion. Developer Joel Drapper wrote how Ruby Central had lost a $250,000-a-year sponsorship from Sidekiq after giving DHH a speaking slot at RailsConf a few weeks later, leaving the nonprofit financially dependent on Shopify (where DHH sits on the board); Shopify then pushed Ruby Central to consolidate control rather than lose its funding. The Register and Heise both covered the fallout. But none of this has cost DHH money—if anything, he's only gained. A few weeks ago, DHH announced the Omacom Foundation to bankroll his Linux distribution, Omarchy, which is nothing more than a few vibecoded scripts on top of Arch Linux. There are twelve "Founding Patrons" pledging a million dollars apiece: * Tobi Lütke, CEO of Shopify * Patrick Collison, CEO of Stripe * Michael Dell, Chairman and CEO of Dell Technologies * Jack Dorsey, Block Head and Chairman of Block * Matthew Prince, CEO of Cloudflare * Brendan Iribe, Cofounder of Sesame and Oculus * Jason Fried, CEO of 37signals * Drew Houston, cofounder and co-CEO of Dropbox * Peter Steinberger, creator of OpenClaw * Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase * Yunjie Dai, cofounder of TapTap * DHH himself. And these corporations are each contributing $100,000 a year for three years: * 1Password * 37signals A dozen of the most powerful executives in tech looked at a man who wrote that a British march calling for the deportation of non-white citizens was "heartwarming," and decided he was the person they wanted to hand a multimillion-dollar foundation to. I should also mention that the same infrastructure companies bankrolling Omarchy and Ladybird are also the backbone of the ongoing violence of U.S. deportations. This includes Amazon's AWS contracts powering ICE, Palantir building ICE's case-management system, and the use of Salesforce's tools. ## "Apolitical" Andreas Kling, founder of the Ladybird browser project (itself an Omacom-adjacent beneficiary, sponsored by Cloudflare, FUTO, Shopify, 37signals, Proton, and JetBrains), built his project's identity around refusing a documentation patch that would have made SerenityOS's manuals gender-neutral, on the grounds that gender-neutral language was "personal politics" that didn't belong in a technical project. Blogger Kate Vibber wrote how that became Ladybird's official contributing guidelines, which now bar "discussions on societal politics" outright—a policy treating the mere existence of trans contributors as more "political" than excluding them. In 2026, Kling posted in support of Charlie Kirk after Kirk's assassination and, per discussion on Lobsters, bristled at being called a fascist for it—a reaction hard to square with "apolitical," since Kirk was a movement figure who, per his own Wikipedia entry, promoted the "white genocide" conspiracy theory and criticized the Civil Rights Act. Vaxry, the developer behind the Hyprland Wayland compositor (another Omacom-funded project), was banned in 2024 by Freedesktop.org's Code of Conduct team over a pattern of the Hyprland Discord enabling harassment of trans community members, including an incident where moderators changed a trans user's display name to strip their pronouns. Vaxry's own public response framed the ban as ideological overreach by "social justice warriors," while the Freedesktop side, recounted at LibreNews, describes over a year of private attempts to get him to address the toxicity before going public. Hyprland's contributing guidelines now ban "political" speech too. Enrico "metux" Weigelt forked the deprecated Xorg server into Xlibre as a rebellion against a "RedHat DEI" conspiracy he believes exists. The founding document of the project was a rant about big-tech diversity initiatives, and its code of conduct is a text file that just says "404." FUTO is a funder of Immich and is run by Eron Wolf, a friend and platformer of Curtis Yarvin, the "dark enlightenment" writer whose ideas about dismantling democracy have now found purchase in the current U.S. administration. Brendan Eich, Mozilla's co-founder and now Brave's CEO, used Brave's infrastructure to give payments to Kiwi Farms, a forum whose harassment campaigns have been linked to multiple suicides. We witness the same pattern over and over. A tech project is declared "apolitical," and defines any accommodation of marginalized contributors as a political act, and keeps the actual politics of the maintainers—nostalgia for ethnically white homogeneous cities and hostility to gender-neutral pronouns—off the table entirely. Because that's just, you know, how they feel. "Apolitical" has never meant a lack of politics. It's meant politics that current power doesn't have to defend. ## The Throughline We have been watching the fragile fury of white masculinity and hate metastasize and fester over the years, from Gamergate's harassment campaigns through years of anti-SJW cringe compilation content mills, the marking of Antifa as the enemy, the tantrum-throwing #AllLivesMatter movement, and the manufactured panic over DEI and "wokeism." You are not living in the neoliberal-Obama era where basic compassion and empathy are the default anymore. And you haven't been for a long time. Despite their cries about censorship and deplatforming, and despite their persecution fetish, these people are not on the fringe. They have board seats and sponsorships and multimillion-dollar foundations. It is no coincidence this is occuring as companies and brands return to X, as the United States votes at a Midterm election being interfered with by a sitting president, as conservatives normalize the far-right in Europe politics and culture. If you want a more thorough and longer list of people, companies, and products, then I recommend reading up on Devine Lu Linvega's Fashware list on Sourcehut, as well as Drew DeVault's list of Weird Little Guys. You may be in a position where the specific harms and rhetoric being spewed are not aimed at you, and you may have been coaxed into viewing what I'm saying here as overreaction, or as a rabid, self-righteous screed. Millions of dollars have been spent to ensure this, and it could not be further from the truth. We cannot afford to continue to shrug off the presence of these people and their projects in open source. A united stand must be taken. **Speak up on this**. Boycott aggressively. Let people know you don't support Cloudflare, Shopify, 37signals, Dell, 1Password, Framework, Block, Coinbase, Dropbox, TapTap, and any other company enabling the spread of dangerous and harmful political ideologies that will continue to result in further violence and death. And let people know the harm these companies are actively doing. We cannot allow this to continue; we must be far more proactive and assertive in our fight against the normalization of fascism and the far right. We must be willing to sacrifice ease and convenience, and we must be willing to sever all connections with these entities. It is our only way forward.

@waspfactory Jag håller med, men man borde reglera plattformarna också. En rekommendation från FHM står sig nog ganska slätt mot deras små arméer av psykologer och designers som arbetar med att göra apparna så svåra som möjligt att lägga ifrån sig.

@mullvadnet Perhaps if you get rid of the CEO that supports pseudo-fascists then you can post things like this with some modicum of credibility.

This point needs to be made over and again: The main purpose of wealth taxes should not be to raise revenue. That's a small and secondary benefit. The main purpose should be to *reduce the fortunes of the ultrarich*. Why? Because those fortunes present a massive threat to democracy and public life.

@joost_rekveld @0xabad1dea Then you could probably continue with a 'real' textbook. I like Vogelsang's Introduction to Classical Chinese because it is rather stringent gramatically and it aims to teach other skills needed to read real texts, like how to understand traditional commentary, but I […]

@joost_rekveld @0xabad1dea You could start with Van Norden's excellent Classical Chinese for Everyone which is explicity aimed at people with no knowledge of Chinese (classical or modern). The introduction to Van Norden's book is also the best beginner-friendly summary of how characters acually […]

@joost_rekveld @0xabad1dea I'm not sure the situation is that bad, at least the textbooks I've used assume you are familiar with /characters/, whether from knowing modern Chinese, Japanese or Korean, but don't actually require speaking Chinese. The lessons are not paced for people that have to […]

I dont like the term “digital sovereignty” because of the pronounced nationalist and authoritarian connotations that it carries, regardless of what the actual intentions of its particular users are. I propose that as hackers, we reframe the core concept (independence of US-centric cloud […]
