We got very excited when we saw this headline but sadly @andyburnham.bsky.social isn't ruling it out either. Still it's a step in the right direction. Contrary to #Heathrow's spin we are confident that Londoners don't want more noise, pollution and congestion. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Any decision to allow #Heathrow expansion would mean waving goodbye to the UK's climate credibility. Relying on unproven & expensive mitigations would push up flight costs & choke off the very demand that expansion is supposed to meet. Well said @thecccuk.bsky.social www.ft.com/content/a8cd...

#Heathrow claims expansion would create jobs. But it risks crowding out other jobs as local businesses are unable to compete with them for staff & premises. The dangers of a local jobs monoculture were clearly exposed by Covid, with areas around the airport particularly badly hit. #No3rdRunway

Just finalising our response to the consultation on #Heathrow expansion (HENPS). The more we plough through the vast quantity of consultation papers, the more it's clear that the DfT's own numbers don't support the case for expansion. It's like whoever wrote the conclusion didn't read the papers!

It would be a tragedy if government plans to allow #Heathrow to expand set back progress on #London's #AirQuality then. Surely we should value children's health above the uncertain possibility of a miniscule increase in GDP by 2050. #Don'tGrowHeathrow #No3rdRunway

Labour's 4 tests. Test 4: #EconomicGrowth. The DfT’s own numbers say #Heathrow expansion would result in just 0.05% additional GDP, many years in the future. Surely not worth it given the huge social and #environmental costs? Verdict: More work needed on the mathematics! #No3rdRunway

Labour's 4 tests. Test 3: #Noise. #Heathrow expansion would mean nearly 1 million more people affected by aircraft noise, & so more likely to suffer from high blood pressure (even when asleep), reduced wellbeing and heart problems.. Result: Either test not met or bar not set high enough!

Labour's 4 tests. Test 2: #AirQuality. #Heathrow expansion would increase pollution in an area that already fails to meet WHO guidelines & risk reversing recent improvements in London’s #AirQuality. The WHO says that pollution limits above its guidelines pose a risk to health. Result: Fail!

Labour's 4 tests. Test 1: #Climate. #Heathrow expansion would mean aviation emissions above the levels recommended by the government’s own advisors, and would mean other sectors (often in the North or Midlands) would have to bear more of the burden of meeting our net zero goals. Test not met!

Labour have previously said #Heathrow would need to meet 4 tests to be allowed to expand: #climate; economic growth; air quality; noise; Over the next 4 days we will look at each of these and assess whether the #airport could meet them. Spoiler alert: we don't think they can!!

It's hard to see how a #3rdRunway is in the UK's national interest when: #Heathrow is 100% owned by overseas investors; overseas transfer passengers are expected to take 75% of new capacity; UK taxpayers are likely to pick up the bill for transport upgrades and the health impacts. #NoThirdRunway
