I'm hoping this budget that gives us nothing much is a little bit of expectation management and there are a few nice big windfall taxes in the offing. The banks, energy companies and online only retailers like Amazon all need hitting up.

Dear tv and radio producers. Thankyou for the invitation. But, no, I do not want to appear on your show to defend the idea that I am English, after 50 years of living and working here, because the increasingly feral right want to turn this into a "debate" and you cannot see how you're being played

One interesting consequence of Burnham’s truth-telling today on Brexit, and plan to set out what I hope will be a path to rejoin, is that Farage will be forced back onto what is now - funnily enough - his least favourite subject. Let’s see him defend his inheritance in detail.

Mark Butcher is Reform UK's candidate in Claremont, Blackpool, standing tomorrow. He's seen here with a group intimidating a council worker taking flags down. A worker, just doing his job. That's him climbing the ladder. Just think how a he would treat council staff if he was a councillor.

The morning after. The fact is we are now in a national argument. Gone are the years of Labour just conceding contested ground; winning power but losing the argument; governing for party over country. If the centre-left loses it will now be after a proper fight.

Has Burnham caught the wave when he senses the country or indeed the world is sick of the billious anger and two bit solutions from the likes of Farage and Trump?

I see nothing wrong with a pension double lock if the money saved goes to social care and other essential public services. If annual pension rises matched only CPI and not also average wage rises this would probably be fair while leaving more money for other things.

@MrBoom @mrboom.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
She wasn't a gifted politician in terms of selling it. Burnham I suspect could do a much better of it, and he's obviously willing to spend the next few years rolling the pitch before it goes in the next manifesto
000
@MrBoom @mrboom.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
It could give way to a double lock, that would probably be an acceptable middle ground.

@MrBoom @mrboom.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
I agree he currently has little room on taxes at the moment, but what I like about AB is that he debates the context behind his decisions and is prepared to argue to change views. He would well prevail if he keeps on pushing the positive case for higher taxes.

@MrBoom @mrboom.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
He can make a double lock, which is a pledge to peg the SP with inflation, but just against CPI rather than average pay increases. Personally, i'd prefer some wealth taxes and higher income tax so he keep it as it is.
