90 years ago, on the 4th of October 1936, antifascist counter protesters stopped a British Union of Fascists march through London’s East End. The Metropolitan Police tried to clear the way for the fascists resulting in violent clashes known as the Battle of Cable Street. #otd #history 🗃️

1963, replacing this 1896 station on part of the same site, which had been built next door to an 1891 Police Court. That station and the court both escaped damage in the Blitz, though an area to the north of the station became a "Clearance Area" postwar.

The 'Acid Bath Murderer' is one of the cases in our new exhibition, opening on 8 September. He assumed this convention would mean he avoid a murder conviction, but pathologist Keith Simpson was able to find remains of his victims. #Forensics125 #forensics #TrueCrime #pathology #museums

In 1921 Astor was joined by Margaret Wintringham (Liberal) and in 1922-1923 they joined forces to defeat the abolition of the Met's Women Patrols on austerity grounds and to gain them power of arrest. #WomensHistory #Herstory #PoliceHistory

#OnThisDay in 1949 John Haigh was found guilty of murder. He is sometimes known as the 'Acid Bath Murderer', though he in fact used barrels rather than bathtubs. His case is included in the counter-forensics section of our #Forensics125 exhibition, due to open in early September. #TrueCrime

Sorry for the delay! We've consulted our pool of retired officers and a 1978 joiner remembers them being as you say whereas a 1980 joiner remembers being issued with them as standard. So hopefully that answers your question!
