It's more like they elected Poilievre, but because he wears a red tie, fewer people protest his far-right acts

Gladiator II feels like it was written by a 13-year old American with ADHD who had just skimmed the Wikipedia page for Arthurian Mythology. In short Gladiator II is the most Gladiator II movie ever made. It’s pretty good.

It's like how getting the door slammed in your face isn't the objective when I'm out canvassing. We can debate how communicative politicians should be on social media, but they're beholden to their constituents, not random internet users.
010
Chris Chase-Onions @mouseiana.bsky.social · 23/12/2024
A quick addendum: Getting blocked by a politician on a small social media site does not make you righteous or superior, it means you've closed off an avenue of communication and you won't effectively get your message out.

Chris Chase-Onions @mouseiana.bsky.social · 23/12/2024
This isn't to say foreign interference isn't an issue to take seriously, or that we can't question any narratives presented, or question the actions of a politician, but to take a step back, look around, and try to understand why something is happening as opposed to denying that's it's happening.

Chris Chase-Onions @mouseiana.bsky.social · 23/12/2024
My advice as a former Liberal to Trudeau supporters on this platform is to take a breath and think before posting. Is what you're attributing to malice, corruption, and conspiracy actually explained by something more reasonable? Are the polls wrong, or are there perspectives you haven't considered?

In 2011 I thought there was going to be that Act 3 twist and Ignatieff would save Canada from the villainous Stephen but I was wrong. I was wrong because I thought politics was a drama and not the decisions of millions of people dealing with factors far outside of what my 16-year old mind imagined.
110
Chris Chase-Onions @mouseiana.bsky.social · 23/12/2024
All of this is to say: There isn't some grand conspiracy as to why things are happening. Canadian politics isn't a TV show with heroes and villains and there isn't some great Act 3 twist that is going to change everything and defeat the evil villain Pierre Poilievre.

Chris Chase-Onions @mouseiana.bsky.social · 23/12/2024
While the CSA got some moderate wins for the NDP, it didn't result in any real polling gains compared to 2021, and has done damage to NDP chances in Blue-Orange seats because of effective marketing by the Tories that it was actually a coalition ('Sellout Singh' has a nice ring to it).
110
Chris Chase-Onions @mouseiana.bsky.social · 23/12/2024
Why is the NDP going to topple the government? Because the political position Singh put himself in of wanting Trudeau to resign but not wanting an election was going to be seen as more self-interested while not actually serving any purpose either ideologically or electorally compared to an election.
100
Chris Chase-Onions @mouseiana.bsky.social · 23/12/2024
Why are the Liberals losing by 25 points? Global backlash against incumbents due to cost of living, Poilievre being right about inflation being the next big issue in 2021, the Liberals not reading the room by not taking housing seriously until a year ago, and a general desire for change.
110
Chris Chase-Onions @mouseiana.bsky.social · 23/12/2024
I've mentioned this in the past few days but the rhetoric has also been there around Jagmeet Singh, who's been called a nazi stooge, a foreign agent, had whether he's a secret religious fundamentalist, and accused of being bribed. This isn't how politics actually work, things are far less exciting.
110
Chris Chase-Onions @mouseiana.bsky.social · 23/12/2024
"My leader is a secret genius who has a master plan, all his enemies are traitors to the country who will be revealed soon, and all the media is purposefully out to get him because they're also traitors." Folks this isn't healthy, and it isn't productive to your course or to political discourse.
210
Chris Chase-Onions @mouseiana.bsky.social · 23/12/2024
Those sentiments, combined with a perception that all Canadian media is biased against the liberals (because they're all owned by Conservatives and/or by foreign adversaries) should really raise some red flags because it's flirting with Qanon rhetoric.
120
Chris Chase-Onions @mouseiana.bsky.social · 23/12/2024
The other article of faith is that the Foreign Interference Report is going to reveal that Poilievre (as well as Freeland and Singh depending on who you ask) is actually a secret foreign agent and is either going to be arrested or people will stop supporting him.
110
Chris Chase-Onions @mouseiana.bsky.social · 23/12/2024
For those who aren't just denying the polls, there's faith. Faith that Justin Trudeau has some secret move that's going to reverse everything and make everyone realise how great he is and how much worse everything will get under Poilievre (the latter statement I'm not disagreeing with).
110
Chris Chase-Onions @mouseiana.bsky.social · 23/12/2024
And while polls can under/overestimate certain parties and candidates, the trend we're seeing is the end of this Liberal Government. Justin Trudeau has beaten difficult situations before (CPC lead after SNC, the slump the Liberals hit early in the 2021 election), but those were smaller than now.
120
Chris Chase-Onions @mouseiana.bsky.social · 23/12/2024
And while strictly speaking that's not entirely untrue, the sentiment that polling doesn't matter isn't. Polls can be skewed, sample sizes can vary, but the universal trend that's happened over the past 18 months is that the Liberals are losing support and the Conservatives are gaining it.
210
Chris Chase-Onions @mouseiana.bsky.social · 23/12/2024
It took me a few years to really wrap my head around it, and I know it's now cliché, but I was stuck in a bubble. The past few days I've seen people desperately trying to keep their bubbles unpopped. The sentiment of "Polls don't matter, votes do!" is one I've seen a few times.
110
Chris Chase-Onions @mouseiana.bsky.social · 23/12/2024
When the house fell in 2011 and the election began I was convinced that there was no way anyone would elect Harper again given the terrible job he'd done, so clearly the polls were just wrong and people would see sense by election day. Spoilers, that didn't happen, Ignatieff didn't pull it off.

Chris Chase-Onions @mouseiana.bsky.social · 23/12/2024
I'm probably going to drop this for the sake of my own sanity, but here's some final thoughts on the Canadian Politics discourse from the past few days. Here comes a (long) #cndpoli thread! A lot of the LPC supporters here remind me of myself in 2011, and not in a good way.
