Had a chance to learn about twill weaving in the Navajo tradition. Super interesting, and I hope to apply some insights to the heddling of twills on the warp-weighted loom. By the time the last living WWL weavers were documented by Hoffman in the 1950s, twills were no longer being woven.... 1/2

I was gifted this beautiful antique hemp brake when I was in PA, and man, is it ever nice to finally have the right tool for this material. ❤️
A manual hemp brake, made for crushing the stalks of retted hemp plants. It is about 5 feet long, and made of hand-hewn American chestnut wood. In the background, many bundles of hemp straw awaiting the brake.
My hand on the handle of the brake. It's really big; photos don't accurately convey its size. Hemp fiber after breaking. Long strands of cellulose fiber with bits of hurd clinging to them.

Where does linen come from? The farm! Today, there is no commercial infrastructure in the U.S. to produce flax fiber for linen. The PA Flax Project has a goal to bring a scutching mill online in Pennsylvania by 2029 to fill that gap.

The antique Balkan loom mid-restoration. I'm a little obsessed with this one! I need to make treadles, re-create a couple other missing pieces, and knit heddles for it. I don't think the pictures convey how small it is. 🧶
An antique weaving loom from eastern Europe (Romania? Transylvania? Bulgaria? Hungary?) Isassembled in my studio. It's very small, compared to the other looms around it.The same loom, from a different angle. My wheels and bookshelves behind it help to communicate how small the loom is.

Pretty sure this is the fanciest loom I've ever worked on.
Side frame of a Scandinavian loom (maybe Swedish?), outdoors, leaning against a tree. It is wet, after being scrubbed with soap and water. Detail of the upper corner of the loom side frame, showing fancy, scrolled shapes cut into the edges of thick slabs of oak. If you zoom in, the small holes of (old, inactive? We hope!) Powder post beetle damage. The whole piece is incredibly heavy, and I haven't any concerns about the structural integrity of these parts.

Jennifer Nelson’s entry to this year’s Minnesota State Fair crop art
A localized version of Guernica with a loon at the center and a person holding an ICE OUT sign

“My piece was inspired by Picasso's Guernica, a work that was his response to the Nazi's bombing of the Basque town. I thought there was a fitting parallel between these incidents about the high price paid by ordinary people when aggressive regimes try out new tactics of war, as well as a fitting juxtaposition of the darkness of living such an experience and the light we shone through it in our own resistance and care for one another. The patterns near Renee Good and Alex Pretti’s mouths are actually their last words in Morse code: ‘I’m not mad at you,’ and ‘Are you okay?’”

Just watched a vid (on another platform) of a local weaver that I know slightly, demo'ing her new warp-weighted loom – and it was painful to watch. Too vertical, brackets too short, juggling an inefficient wooden shuttle, etc, etc. Does she not know I TEACH THIS? Sorry, just venting.
