Reagan and Thatcher rose to prominence once no could remember the Gilded Age. Glass-Steagal was repealed when no one could remember the Depression and look where we are now that no one can remember World War II...

I don't think it's an accident they want us scared of getting to the same age when we really start getting strong and figuring ourselves out.

Very possibly the last tomato and mozz of the season. What a birthday metaphor. Something something birth, death, the changing of seasons and middle age something.

A platter with tomato and fresh mozzarella salad garnished with basil. Prosciutto and a baguette are in the background.

The only thing I miss about my youth is a body that didn't hurt so much. In every other way, I like being 45 more than I ever liked being 15, 25, or 35. I didn't even start to get cool until 10 years ago. bsky.app/profile/most...

I still have a spa day and shenanigans in North Beach coming up. Today I am having a cannabis seltzer likely followed by a boozy seltzer and a caprese salad.

So, no. You're not going to deprogram your Republican coworker or uncle by chatting them up over a meal every now and again. Can it be enlightening or fun? Sure, for some kinds of people, I guess. But it's not a cure for anything that ails our republic at the moment.

Seriously, this stuff has been researched. Single conversation experiments - with specially trained volunteers delivering a focus group tested messages - find that essentially nobody changes their mind. (See the section on canvassing here) www.jstor.org/stable/pdf/2...

Second, what Wolfers is proposing runs counter to everything we know about political persuasion. To be blunt *it won't work.* We have two models of persuasion, and both of them depend on strength in numbers. One person can't do it alone, especially not a casual acquatance.

First, doing that as a cishet white guy is playing that game on the easy setting. None of us is risking anything meaningful by asking your resident Republican out to lunch. But if you're Black, if you're gay, if you're a woman, if you're trans, etc. you're inviting someone into your life who...

This has been on my feed all day so I'm going to give it as fair as treatment as I can. Prof. Wolfers is well meaning & I get the intuition, but he's speaking outside his area of expertise and he's just wrong. Having lunch with someone you disagree with isn't going to "cure ideological bias." 🧵

Forecasting San Francisco heat will forever be a challenge. The sea breeze was just a slight bit more pronounced on Sunday, which has kept temps below forecast. Also, widespread clouds took an edge off heat along the Peninsula and in the North Bay. www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/arti...

Bay Area heat advisory continues, but clouds and breeze keep S.F. cooler

The National Weather Service has expanded a heat advisory across most of the Bay Area, with the weekend’s toasty temperatures expected to increase slightly on Sunday.
