with #DELTARUNE chapter 5 approaching i am thinking a lot about the weird goner bird 'normal_npc' and how its eerie dialogue progressively deteriorates till it almost seems to be trying to spell out 'W.D'.

I just wish we could see more life, talk to more people. But as the world grows bigger the sad silence remains the same. And that would be all right if it felt fully intentional, but instead, what it does for me is break immersion. I can’t buy this game’s scale beyond Altus.

Elden Ring shows a beautiful post-war world that still clings to life desperately, where flowers still bloom and characters still have so much hope. And then it just does Dark Souls again. The villages are empty. Their doors cannot be opened. The occupants are always hostile.

And that was fine in Dark Souls where that ruinous emptiness felt more prevalent, where that apocalyptic darkness felt like part of the path you walked. But it remains a big issue for me in Elden Ring.

Even something as simple as the hub area being an in-world location, a place you could feasibly go back to like Majula, would do a lot for making humanity’s connection to TLB feel less tenuous. But you don’t really get that, because it simply isn’t that kind of game.

this was fine in DS1/2 because of the linearity - you could easily conclude that little pieces of surviving civilisation, little villages and families, are still out there somehow. But when Melina in ER says ‘life endures, births continue’, I struggle to see it.

But instead we have a Fromsoft classic. It’s mostly fields and the occasional castle and ruin. Everyone is a mad zombie or hollow trying to kill you. NPCs are mostly confined to the Roundtable (sealed away by fast travel). The world is barren.

You’d expect an open-world game like this to be more than a complete wasteland, with some remnants of civilisation - old abandoned cities, massive battlefields, at least ONE village of normal people that yet live, clinging to life.

There are often times where the game seems to be unsure of how big it actually wants to be. Nokstella, Castle Sol/Morne are all straightforward, short linear paths with little to the waysides. The Grand Cloister is hardly an area at all. And yet they’re presented like grand, large vistas.

And don’t get me wrong. Leyndell is, to me, one of the best video game levels of all time. It’s an incredible and compelling layout. But it *does* look smaller than Anor Londo. It does feel less like a city than Eleum Loyce. It feels less large-scale on initial viewing than Irithyll.

Since ER wants you to ‘go everywhere’, it means big city locations aren’t nearly as capable of appearing grand and large. And even then, most of what you see isn’t as impressive as it looks. Almost none of the buildings in these screenshots can be entered.

One of the most notable things about the Souls games’ big cities is that they were able to seem so much bigger than they were, in part thanks to showing surrounding buildings / townships that were inaccessible.

talked to my friends about this the other day and unironically... curse-rotted greatwood would be kinda cool for a crater boss instead of the fire prelates sometimes. different weak points (the hand for melee, the other bubbles for ranged). destroys the floor which lets you reach the bottom.
