We’ve always known, but now it’s confirmed, that Danielle Smith’s separatist friends, including a sitting UCP president, have been conspiring to hand over Alberta’s land, oil and water to Donald Trump. Albertans deserve better than this weak leadership that hurts us all. tgam.ca/3Txh5Gt

The elephant in the room
Alberta separatists have gone to D.C. offering fresh water and oil in exchange for American support – and Republican operatives have provided tactical assistance inside the province

This is seismic news for fisheries scientists. Northern cod is *the* iconic symbol of total fisheries collapse due to overfishing (and other factors) *and* the iconic symbol of a complete failure to recover for decades afterwards. This is like announcing the complete recovery of bison on land.

Wake up, babe. The Prime Minister just dropped “hydronym”.
The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which, appropriately, means “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big”.

The name is more than 400 years old, predating both the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America.

We know that America is changing. Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronyms.

Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario – then, now and always.

A bill to ban it almost made it through parliament. If you could bring it up with your mp, that would be great. The majority of Canadians oppose this, I believe.

For over a year, Canada has worked intensively and in good faith with the United States to negotiate a new comprehensive trade deal. We have been pragmatic, patient, and persistent. Our goal has always been to get the best deal for Canadians, never a deal at any price or on any time frame.

This is really significant and important. And also just the beginning. We now see the early seeds of this decoupling, but sovereignty efforts in Europe (and buyers' increased willingness to pay for it) will result in a completely different defence and tech ecosystem several years down the line.

It was Mark Carney that prevented us from using austerity, as they did in the UK and Europe, after the financial crisis of 2008. Canada’s economy recovered much more quickly because of that. He stabilized the UK financial system through Brexit, which was largely caused by austerity.

There is a lot we can and should do to improve our political systems, provincially and federally, but we are in a genuine crisis, and the person leading us is the best we could hope for. His wife is a very impressive economist in her own right.

We have an opportunity to rewire the financial system with digital currencies and digital payments that could be a huge improvement for people and businesses. We have a chance to make the trading system much fairer. There is no one who understands this better than Mark Carney.

Mark Carney is the best possible person we could have leading us at the moment. We are facing a likely stock market crash. Crypto, stable coins, and private markets, plus lax US regulations have the potential to bring on another financial crisis.

Believe me you don’t have to tell me anything about Tim Houston. I am fully aware of all he has done, and I am furious about it, but swarming his car like that is not cool, and it really doesn’t help the cause of those who are constructively opposing him. It undermines it.

It is not right wing or thin skinned to oppose intimidation and vandalism. I do not consider myself remotely right wing. There probably should have been police present to prevent that impulsive act of hooliganism. Perhaps that young man would not be in jail now.
