Transplant culture doesn’t even have to involve transplants! “Friends” is transplant culture despite 5/6 of the friends growing up within at least commuter rail distance of NYC.

One of my takes that is not quite well-thought-out enough for Prime Time is that there is a distinct difference between “transplants” and “transplant culture” and that the vitriol directed at the former really happens when the latter ramps up.

I can't stress enough to all you young'uns how the "real NYer" discourse of the early 00s will never be matched. Anyone here pre-Giuliani got to claim "bad old days" and by the early 00s there was finally a critical enough mass of people who weren't that they could be scorned at as a group.
