I stubbornly hemmed a Free People "One Clover" skirt from my alterations stash this past week. These whisper-light, viscose voile skirts have lushly-gathered, asymmetric, ruffled hems with, (growl) raw edges. That's SUPPOSED to be boho, but they just fray horribly. Except for MINE. ALT-texts 4 more
Photo of the hem's raw edge. The skirt stayed in its packaging right until I was ready to work on it, and it's already fraying. Reviews show these skirts completely ruined if washing is attempted. Jeezis. WHY?! Yet I adore them as light floof layers. And I DO have time for handwork. Photo shows me clipping the hem into place, ready to be sewn. Hemming foreverAnd done!! Photo shows me wearing the fresh-celery-green skirt as God intended, layered all princessy with other ruffly floof skirts, and no longer in danger of disintegrating into a heap of frayed threads!

I bought dried pea flowers to make my chamomile tea blue. These worked great! I used just 5 wee flowers, and to get that bright blue, I microwaved them in a cup with a small amount of water for half a minute before adding more tea-hot water and the teabag to color the tea.
Omg this blue is SOMETHIN' in a clear glass mug!! Apparently pea flower is an acid base indicator. I hear the color will turn purple with the addition of citrus like orange or lemon. Photo shows the pea flower package, the chamomile tea packet, A white mug with blue tinted chamomile, and the purveyor's cardCloseup of the purveyor's card. If you also need blue tea, these peaflowers from etsy.com/shop/TheSteampunkBuddha work swell.

Being able to sew is good. I love the leafy, sophisticated, and feminine cutwork-over-lace look of this top, but those ridonkulous first-day-of-kindergarten puffed-cap-sleeves HAD to go. So I saw to that. Details in ALT text
Photo shows a dusty blue cutwork top, one sleeve cut off, displayed on a patterned rug. I cut the sleeves off, following their own inner seam line for a seam allowance. I zigzagged the edge, and sewed the zigzagged edge under with a simple straight stitch. Despite all that intimidating, fancy cutwork, the project was an easy fix with a sewing machine, for the fabric is regular cotton lawn, no jersey stretch or chiffon fraying.Photo of the finished top, now utterly unsleeved, a tank top now, with all that luscious cutwork, and none of the sleeves' childlike goofypoof.I love the top as a tank over a dusty rose layer paired with these floral print linen pants!Honestly, I think the puffypoof cap sleeves were even childlike and goofy on the model, despite her modeling the top over bare skin. But I could see how lovely the cutwork was, plus sale-on-sale pricing, and confidence in my basic ability with Odette the sewing machine made me get it anyway. Glad I did!

I do not want to say goodbye to my birthday flowers. So I won't. See ALT txt.
A photo of two dissected flower bouquets, hung up to dry, upside down, so the weight of the blossoms does not make the stems fold over and look all sad. Lazy work. They're against a surface, so they won't dry perfectly radially symmetric, but I'll probably make them into a dried bouquet or use them in collage, so I'm good if they have a pressed side. I just used painter's bue tape. The roses, ferns, and the blue strawflowers should dry quite well; I have not tried hydrangeas or sunflowers before. We shall see!

I turn sixty years old today! Excelsior! Check ALT text for birthday fashion description.
It's my 60th birthday today, and I'm doubling down on pink. I'm sporting a hot pink tank top paired with a knee-length print skirt of splashy pink flowers on a sky blue background, magenta tights, a pink and rust plaid cotton duster I adorned with brocade pink and blue ribbon trim, with the lapels affixed nicely in place by vintage brooch-pins. My topper today is a wide brimmed Madagascar straw sunhat. My long hair is loose today. It is natural brunette, because I simply can't be bothered with the tedium of having it dyed, and it sparkles with many hairs of natural white, every last one of which I have earned! I'm photographed in front of a glassfront bookshelf full of comics, beside my friend the resin anatomical model skeleton. Memento mori, my loves.

A generous soul brought several utilikilts to the +size clothes swap I went to today. I only took one, so my sartorial-sisters got them too. It was about 4 inches too big. I just finished taking it in. The cotton duck is TOUGH to sew! Glad I have strong repair needles. Like sewing a circus tent!
Me grinning like the cat that both ate the canary and then scored an awesome black Utilikilt. Back view of me in the clothing swap Utilikilt, taken in to fit me, which goes great with the gothtastic grommety zip vest a dear friend gave me while cleaning out her closet. I am not sure it's legal to have clothes this kickass cool when one is a sixty year old crone. Please do not call the police.

Success! I went to a clothing swap party, brought five bags of clothes with me, only left with three bags (only, ha!) and I'm very happy with my new finds!
A russet dress with a black stars pattern, a cotton cherrys on black patterned dress, a Hell Bunny vintage style double breasted pea-coat, and a slate colored sun dress with elaborate tree and twirlies embroidery. I must take in the grey dress, or perhaps turn it into a drawstring skirt, but I LOVE the embroidery. A green Svaha cotton dress in a chemisty glass pattern for those extra sciency days, a houndstooth dirndl with buttons-adjustable shoulder straps, a little grey knit zip cardigan with a bit of lurex shine to it, and OMG A REAL UTILIKILT!!! A long, solid-purple, long-sleeved duster layer, an ochre burn-out velvet fringed shawlette, a trim little kitchen apron in a kapow floral print of white and fire engine red, a pair of black-lace trimmed bloomer shorts in a small scatter print of chinese characters on a misty celadon background, a cute cloth adorned sewing box, and a layered sari fabric wrap skirt in chartreuse and hunter green florals.

The WIP crocheted shawl belonged to TrifleCat today (and my old crone hands need breaks from repetitive work) so I added a new panel of work to my collaged appliqué skirt! My free-movement sewing on my machine is IMPROVING. Dig my songbird cutout with daringly thin twigs! See ALT texts for details.
The skirt in my wonderful Baby Lock Valentine's Day sewing machine (thank you, @notwebsafe)The front of the skirt, laid out so the collage of lace and fabric cutouts and embroidered twirls is visibleThe new panel! The fabric cutouts and a doily are all machine sewn on, feed-dogs lowered for free-motion machine sewing, and since my machine does not regulate stitch length, I've been working on improving my control of moving the fabric evenly enough to get decently effective sewing. Hubris or SKILL? Lookit dat stitch line on the thin cutout twig! I did that! Please clap. I made a LOT of messes to get here!

All works-in-progress are belong to Triflecat.
Photo of Trifle, a Lynx-point Siberian cat, lounging on a dusty-sage colored couch with Haeckel biological illustration throw pillows about. She is nonchalantly shedding her low-allergen hairs onto a half-made, stash-buster, mixed-yarns striped shawl I am making in creams, browns, greens, and reds which should compliment a number of my floral prints and a couple of my upcycled appliquéd garments.A closer shot of her regal self, gazing at me with entitled blue-eyed self assurance. Clearly I must work on the shawl later. Now TrifleCat needs it for resting her important toes.

Okay, well, THAT SAID, the dress is pretty darn cute.

Huge, fancy, horribly rough-edged itchy tags, not just tacked on, but FRENCH-SEAM SEWN IN, so I must open a seam and resew the dress to keep these motherfuckers from giving me a bleeding rash on my neck are VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN. Mend your ways, Farm Rio. (At least it was a sale on sale purchase.)
photo shows a stoopit arrogant giant tag with a novelty cutout shape and colorful threads that I removed from a dress, and the open edge I must sew shut again, but you can't tell from looking at the photo what it feels like, that it isn't merely itchy, it has an edge keen and rough enough to cut breakfast toast. Jeezis, stop advertising, Farm Rio. I ALREADY BOUGHT THE DRESS.

I'm modeling a gift mixed yarns crocheted scarf and hat that I made on request for a deserving gothling. I finished them, I tried them on for a selfie, I mailed them off, and now in my home they are naught but a Bluesky post!
Selfie, eyes lowered, small smile. I'm wearing a finished crocheted beanie and scarf, in a blacks, grays, and reds colorway. They're both crocheted in rows of simple double crochets, back loop only insertion, to make those nice ridges between rows, and each row is made of at least two yarns held together, for a painterly look, and a warm thicc fabric. Another selfie in the hat and scarf, this time looking at the lens and grinningPhoto shows the gothy black-gray-red scarf and hat on a hardwood floor so they're easier to see. For YEARS I've been making and gifting these stashbuster mixed yarn scarves and hats with boxes of my deceased mother and sister's inherited project leftovers and yarns I pick up at garage sales and thrift stores. Easy project, unique gifts. A photo of others I have made and kept, a hat scarf set in teals, blues, and purples, a scarf in candy reds and purples, and a olive-greens and purples scarf with long fringes.

My good people, I present: The great tragedienne, Sarah Bernhardt, incarnate as TrifleCat! She has been fed, AND given treats. Her craft, perfection. Wasting no motion drawing attention to her own beauty, she directs our gaze to the plate licked immaculately clean, weeping in clarion tones of woe.
Trifle, a lynx-point Siberian cat, has a mostly ivory coat with dark tail, feet, and tabby striped face. She stands on the granite counter of the kitchen island, staring pointedly at a clean, white plate, not a crumb on to hint at the full breakfast or the treats she was already given. The imaginary audience can hear her clear meows in the uppermost seats of the gallery.

I love that color that wanders between brown and purple. Feeling fig today, and sporting gift treasures.
A tighter closeup so the jewelry described in the second photo, the amethyst knot brooch, the chimera headed knot brooch, and the rather beetlish Edwardian repoussée pendant are easier to see. A nice selfie; beloved vintage jewelry is easier to see in this one. My hat has a wee Victorian mourning portrait pin and a big ole vintage amber glass brooch. I'm wearing an amethyst and gold vermeille knot pin, a Victorian "Etruscan revival" chimera-headed knot pin, and the lovely Edwardian pendant and matching earrings my husband got me from a favorite vintage store as a cherished birthday treat.A photo of me leaning on my walker and modeling the whole figgy outfit, a floral mesh layering body suit and two kinds of thin flowy slip skirts under a floral chiffon dress with a plunge neckline and balloon three-quarter length sleeves. I've accessorized with a vintage seventies woven leather belt, my fave befeathered and brooch pinned brown cloche hat, and some dearly favorite jewelry, gifts from my husband for various birthdays and holidays.

More beading funz. Between two busted necklaces and a lovely pendant off of a filthy cord plus some inherited beads and I was able to make me a long necklace, and a shorter one with a pair of matching earrings for my daughter. Shh. Don't tell her. Details in ALT texts.
Photo of a messy beading tray as I try to figure out how I'm going to assemble everything. There's ONE excellent antique porcelain dragon bead I got in China, um, 37 years ago? Yeah! It had been on a cord with a tassle, but the cord wasn't that great to begin with, and it had gotten very dirty and frayed. I also got the necklace that yielded the large and small vintage cloisonné beads there. The lapis curved beads and the bright-blue, round stone beads (probably died howlite, not speckly enough or quite dark enough for lapis) were from a different broken necklace, and with those along with small glass iridescent beads I inherited from my sweet departed sister, there's enough length here for me to share some of the precious cloisonné wealth with my daughter! I had two, only two, lapis long rectangle beads. Earrings. Obviously. A closeup photo of the glorious, round, pierced-porcelain dragon pendant, now wired with beads on his new bead necklace home. You can also see detail of the large and small vintage cloisonné beads above the dragon.Finished! Photo shows the long necklace with the porcelain dragon pendant, the short necklace with the dramatic three curved lapis beads, and the earrings.

I'm tired and sore after a grueling day of (checks notes) sitting upright in a chair. I have a dress I want to wear on Sunday, and I realized the 2 unfinished strands of crisocola beads I bought years ago in a mineral store would complement it, and well, that became my day! deets in ALT txt
I'm in an outfit of chocolate brown and blue, sitting next to a beading tray with green-turquoise crisocola beads arranged in one of the arced paths with vintage crystal spacers of iridescent teal all ready to be strung with small glass beads and tiny seed beads. A necklace display that helps me figure out how the graduated lengths will look together sits on the table beside me. A view of the beading tray and tools with two finished necklaces on the black display OMG THEY ARE FINISHED. Photo of the necklace display showing all four necklaces They are of graduated lengths, designed to be worn together, but individual, each strand has it's own clasp, so I can have the flexibility of wearing as many or as few as I want, and also for durability; if one breaks, they don't ALL break. They'll go great with the dress! Photo displays a midnight blue dress with a splashy, abstract water-color-like print in jewel tones with the necklaces hung on the hanger neck. The dress is hung against a white door. The dress is winkled. I really must iron the dress, but, uh, tomorrow. All that brutally athletic sitting up really tired your favorite gimp out!
