The cops raided / shut down every illegal vape store in Geelong this week and now every single Geelong-centric part of social media is a constant stream of requests for places to buy what is technically an illegal drug. So basically just like regular off-line Geelong

I always remember reading someone saying they'd walked out of a (good IMHO) movie because the story was just hitting the same beats movies always use to create a "good" movie, and while DIGGER definitely has problems I'll always go to bat for a movie flailing around trying to figure out what to say

Really excited about a future where the only kinds of art we ever get to hear about are either AI-generated money laundering schemes by associates of the three people who own all media outlets or AI-generated publicity scams by associates of the three people who own all media outlets

The reason AI is constantly sold to us this way and not by focusing on the things it can actually do is because its creators think the real selling point of AI is as a way to deliberately make bad or harmful decisions while avoiding all responsibility and liability for making those decisions

Increasingly it seems like the big thing that Cyberpunk as a genre didn't get about that whole "corporations run everything" future was that those corporations would only make useless crap that made everyone who encountered it want to die

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

Six (nine?) months into a creative project and tonight I suddenly remember the actual overall central idea I had planned to base my whole approach on but totally forgot about, no wonder the only kind of writing I've ever had any success at has been 400 words or less

Mel is not wrong but this has reminded me that I am so old / started pro reviewing so young (at 20!) that when I started distributors only ever held public previews at specific cinemas - Roadshow at Village Bourke st, Fox/Columbia/Tri-Star at Hoyts Bourke st, and UIP at Greater Union Russell st

With the demise of the Jam Factory, central Melbourne no longer has one single obvious cinema where distributors can hold their preview screenings. That means that their choice of location now is linked to the perceived quality of the film - like whether it's a dud or something they need to upsell

If there's any consolation it is: the whole enterprise will be an utter disaster and they will lose a ton of money. I don't believe these people know how to make good and/or successful films. They've bought a dried-up well. The creative springs are spouting elsewhere.

When I was the carer for my mum I repeatedly had my well meaning but out-of-town sister asking me to get “support” so I could get a break from the 14 hour days. She didn’t believe me when I said that the support would give me maybe 3 daytime hours off once a fortnight

The standard by which all William Gibson adaptation should be judged is “how fancy are the hotel rooms?”. Which is why NEW ROSE HOTEL - which takes place almost entirely in hotel rooms - will always be the best screen version of his work

My favourite genre of "new development in the arts" report is when someone goes through a massive list of possibly useful things about the new development then says "I have one major caveat" and they mention the one thing that absolutely will happen and will put loads of people out of work

One of the things I feel that history texts don't cover enough when they're covering the rise and fall of empires is "what if an empire just really, really pissed off everyone else around it for decades at a time and then one day everyone else realised the empire was now a bit shit"

Saw a BLADE RUNNER take that was "this movie isn't saying anything interesting". It's a story where someone hired by the government to murder escaped slaves because they're legally not human comes to realise that humanity isn't something defined by the law, which feels kind of interesting to me

that's right, Bruce Campbell www.mensjournal.com/entertainmen...
When asked how it’s been for him to see the series transform since its indie beginnings way back in 1981 with director Sam Raimi, Campbell revealed his one issue with the recent installments.

“I’d like more humor back in. The three features have been mostly humorless, and I personally have a problem with that,” he said, echoing a sentiment shared among some of the franchise’s fans. “There’s no point for these to get too grim. You can be scary without being grim.”

“A little more humor wouldn’t kill you,” he added. “And one hero that you really can root for. Ash is an idiot, but you want him to survive.”

“Modern filmmakers love to color their movies like a David Fincher movie, like a hospital room, you know?” Campbell continued. “Gray-green, like a garage. Garage lighting. And so, okay, it’s a choice. It’s not mine. I think even a horror movie can look pretty. Why not throw them off? Make it all look pretty and wonderful, and then let them have it.”

What gets me is that these cancelled sex monsters always come back with the exact same kind of work they were producing before. There's no "shit, I just went through something massive, I should use my art to examine it". It's almost as if the whole point of "art" for them is to use it to fuck people
