I just finished reading WHERE WE STAND, WHERE WE FALL by @lizbethmyles.bsky.social and it's a terrific analysis of the many ways DOCTOR WHO has been political - often overtly - from the beginning. Refreshing to read good faith criticism of the show by somebody who likes it and knows their stuff.

I loved DIGGER. There is an overt self awareness and artifice that are dialled up so deliberately it creates a meta commentary on the nature of political discourse where substance is a much less powerful commodity than performance. Cruise is fantastic. More thoughts: letterboxd.com/cinemaautops...

I once had the good fortune and joy of being taught super 8mm filmmaking by Arthur Cantrill, only to later discover how significant he and his wife Corinne were to experimental filmmaking and academia. Very sad to learn of his death. Screenshot and photo taken from www.facebook.com/share/p/14yW...
On behalf of Arthur's friends and family, I'm sorry to report that Arthur died of pneumonia at Ellery House in Castlemaine at 12.44pm on Thursday September 24th. It was quite sudden and fortunately his friend Jenny Peake could be with him. His son Ivor is being well looked after. A funeral/celebration/memorial will be held later in the year -- details will be posted here when they become available. Arthur's personal email account will stop working in the near future, but if you have questions about the Cantrills or their films you can reach me, Jake Wilson, via this page or at jake at jakewilson dot com dot au. The picture below was taken by Corinne in London in 1966-7.

PULP: WHAT DO YOU DO FOR AN ENCORE? is now on MUBI and I loved it. I probably can't be objective but I do think it is a well-made doc/concert film, charting both the history of the band and delivering the music and spectacle of their recent live shows. COYOTE VS ACME pays homage to the anarchic spirit of classic Warner Bros cartoons, gently tapping into the emotional bond many of us have with the characters, before quickly getting back to hilarious, surreal cartoonish violence. Probably the best live action/animation since WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT.

I had a blast watching the Korean monster movie HOPE, which is released in Australia tomorrow. BY ANY MEANS is a stylish Southern Gothic neo noir with just the right amount of hardboiled pulpiness to keep the moral ambiguity fun rather than didactic. I liked it way more than I thought I would. Echos of IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT. More thoughts here: letterboxd.com/cinemaautops...

I saw I WANT YOUR SEX last night and it was so great seeing a new Gregg Araki film, especially with such a strong cast. A modern and kink focus riff on SUNSET BOULEVARD, about a BDSM relationship within the contemporary art world, it is Araki at his most scathing, funny and even thoughtful.

There is so much to love about Tim Curry (ANNIE, LEGEND, CLUE etc) but like so many others, seeing him as Dr Frank-N-Furter in THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW when I was a teenager was revelatory.

Awful news about Glen Hansard’s death. He wasn’t that much older than me. I saw ONCE shortly before spending Christmas in Dublin, and I’ll forever associate that time with Hansard’s music in that film and with The Frames. I never saw him play live but by all reports it was something very special.

I reckon most days I catch myself absentmindedly humming one of Bill Oddie’s songs from THE GOODIES. ‘Needed’, ‘Run’, ‘The Funky Gibbon’ etc are part of my childhood soundtrack. The final opening credits song might still be my favourite. Vale Bill Oddie. What a legend. youtu.be/9iCPLGd4epo?...

THE ODYSSEY is long, it is extremely serious and sincere, it is just as focused on characters and themes as it is on spectacle - and it takes its time to get to any action - and I was on board with it all. More thoughts on Letterboxd, but I loved it: letterboxd.com/cinemaautops...

Sam Neill was such a class act. Insanely versatile and yet he always delivered a specific quality to his performances that was uniquely his. And off the screen he was a person of integrity, compassion and warmth. I loved Sam Neill. Everybody loved Sam Neill. His death is a real loss to us all.

SILENT FRIEND is a mesmerising film. Three stories set around a ginkgo tree at the heart of a German university about socially isolated people looking for meaningful connections. The way the film suggests a harmony between science and nature, intellectualism and humanity, is deeply rewarding.

I rewatched this masterpiece last night. A classic of English cinema, maybe my favourite Pressburger & Powell film. Decades ahead of its time in style and themes. Not just anti-Nazi but anti- underestimating and going easy on Nazis. Lots more thoughts on Letterboxd: letterboxd.com/cinemaautops...

THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD is somehow bleak and cynical while still seductively mysterious. Burton is perfectly as a spy where it's impossible to tell if his alcoholism and bitterness are part of the act or his real self, making his glimpses of humanity all the more profound. #filmblindspot

Anthony Head’s performance as Giles in BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER was such a positive portrayal of a mentor/father figure and an essential ingredient in what made that show so special. He was also a great DOCTOR WHO villain on screen and in an early Big Finish audio series. He was great in everything.

I don't think I've seen a film that applies the principles of the uncanny to physical spaces in the same way as BACKROOMS. There's something so eerie about the empty, generic, liminal spaces that fill business parks, offices and retail warehouses, and this film capitalises on the dread they evoke.

MOTHER MARY depicts the breakdown of a close friendship as a cataclysmic event with all the heightened stylistic flourishes of melodrama and horror. Creating an emotional reality where the trigger for the most devastating downward spiral is falling out with your best mate, worked for me.

Thomas Caldwell @cinemaautopsy.bsky.social · 11/05/2026
OBSESSION's 'careful what you wish for' premise is used in a suitably sinister way in the wake of manosphere ideology where the goal of men-children is not to be loveable, but to manipulate women into loving them. Inde Navarrette gives a terrific performance and overall this is a fun and nasty ride.

The Liberals losing voters to One Nation tells me that despite what they want you to believe, an awful lot of people on the right are primarily driven by emotion, and the emotions they feel are pretty nasty ones that are easily manipulated. This is not something thoughtful people do.
