How I arrived on BlueSky
Medieval painting of a knight in full arms on a white horse. He is turning back, maybe picking a fruit from a tree theybare passing. Or maybe throwing something round at a dark blue animal. We can only see two hind legs and a tail.

One of the things we can do for #TruthAndReconciliation Day is to read books by Indigenous authors. Like Anna Marie Sewell's "Humane," for instance
Cover of the book, showing that it's part of VPL's Indigenous collection.

Ode To A Middle-Aged Man #vss365 #poetry
Ode to a middle-aged man

There was nothing special about you
50-ish, overweight, ordinary nose, chin, eyes
Nothing in your voice that made my heart beat faster
Then you started talking about your trucking company
Your eyes lit up, you sat up straighter
And the way you spoke of your guys
How well they handled the trucks
How lovingly they treated the motors –
Oh, your passion!
How your hands flew as you told me
About rims and tires, suspension, exhausts!
Over 30 years ago we had that one date
I never saw you again, forgot your name
But i’ll never forget you.

Oh the times i’ve talked about you!
You’ve probably passed on by now but
Oh how I wish your spirit well!

Thank you. It seems we have different styles, though ... this is from workshops I give on haiku
Guidelines you can start with:
✓ present tense
✓ something concrete (no direct philosophizing)
✓ 5, 7, 5 ok but not important
✓ probably less than 18 syllables
✓ three lines
✓ no title
✓ sparse or no punctuation
✓ not a complete sentence; try for two juxtaposed/contrasting parts
✓ focus on what’s important: as few unnecessary words as possible
✓ e.g. can you leave out a verb, an article like “a”, “the”, an
adjective like “beautiful” or adverb like “quickly?”; is “cold” already
implied in “winter”? (But don’t make it sound “me Tarzan you
Jane” stilted)

Examples of haiku you probably won’t find in a literary haiku journal
Capturing sunlight
Keeping it in a bottle
Darkness steals it back
This has three parts, and it is not a concrete moment.

Go on - steal your wings
Take 'em and fly - far away.
You deserve better.
Three parts, tells the reader how to interpret the poem. Forced 5-7-5. Unnecessary punctuation.

Your imperfection,
Perfectly suited to you.
All is imperfect.
Not concrete, purely philosophical. Repetition of words. Unnecessary punctuation

Working on a workshop about haibun. This is the image I'll use on my slides.
'Landscape with a Solitary Traveler' by Yosa Buson. A long scroll on beige paper (parchment?), Dark blue, black, and gray ink. A gnarled tree in the left foreground, a rail-less bridge over a gorge, and from it a steep path up a mountain with more gnarly trees

The Sunshine Coast is really committed to Indigenous culture. All place names are in Indigenous & English. And here is an article about kelp, integrating ʔayʔaǰuθəm ʔayʔaǰuθəm (often written as Ayajuthem) is the ancestral language of the Tla’amin people. The name ʔayʔaǰuθəm means “to speak it well”
Left side of article about life in the intertilal zone shows the Tla'amin names for herring, seaweed, sea urchin, and abalone. The text is too long to reproduce. It talks about a kelp nursery, using the Tla'amin word for kelp. I don't have the keyboard to reproduce it. The article is in qathet Living. qathet is the name for the former Powell River.

On her deathbed she has a few breaths left. She uses them to tell me a story. About a night in old Calgary stopping by the grain elevators, her black-and-gold polka dot dress slipped off her shoulders, his hand on second base, and oh, that kiss … #vss365
Painting by Doug Crook. Under a grey, blue and orange sky, one red and two white grain elevators. In front of it a batch of grass and an old rusty red car parked by a gravel road.
