@independentage.bsky.social is entering a new chapter but our purpose remains. Since 1863, we’ve stood beside older people facing financial hardship. From 2026 we will look a bit different but our ambition is clear, let's end financial hardship in later life www.independentage.org/our-new-brand

Too often people in later life are left out of the conversation so we welcome the PM's acknowledgement of the issues facing older people on low incomes. With any triple lock changes, pensioners on low incomes now and in the future must not miss out. www.independentage.org/ceo-responds...
Screengrabs of Independent Age's reaction to Andy Burnham's speech read: "Before a double lock is implemented, we need to know that the UK Government has fully considered, and put in place protection for, older people on low incomes. Any changes that are made to the State Pension must ensure no current or future pensioners on a low income lose out. It is important to see action to tackle pensioner poverty directly. For instance, we would love to see a public take-up strategy to drive up the numbers receiving vital entitlements like Pension Credit and Housing Benefit. In the spirit of the Prime Minister's speech, everyone in this country needs to know they can rely on a strong social safety net if they reach older age without an adequate income."

There will always be people on a low income who cannot remain in or re-enter work due to disability, ill health and caring responsibilities as they move towards the State Pension age. This group needs different support to those who are able to stay in employment.

Too many older people are cutting their water usage to manage soaring costs. The UK Govt must introduce a national social tariff to ensure older people on a low income receive consistent support to afford this essential. Sign the #TappedOut petition 🖋️ campaigns.independentage.org/page/187255/...
Small icons illustrate three stats which read: People over 65 in England and Wales are cutting back to manage the cost of their water bill, with 3 in 10 flushing the toilet less, 1 in 4 spending less time in the shower, and 1 in 6 showering less often.

The State Pension is clearly seen by the Commission as a key pillar when it comes to ensuring everyone has an adequate income in older age. But without an effective and adequate social security system that reaches the people that need it, those on low income will continue to be let down
