The output etc was addressed by the other comment, the other thing is that the building designs generally do not lend themselves to adding ductwork. There's also just not a good basis in terms of envelope/insulation because of the passive ventilation techniques preferred so far

There would still be considerable issues with the wall behind the radiator. We have problems every year in the toilet room just from the toilet cistern The general humidity level is such that any significant cooling would need decent dehumidification happening in order to be healthy and effective.

I remember someone super cool proposing a Terf House reality show where they were told there was a secret trans but the twist was no there wasn't. It was hilarious! And even funnier that they're just doing it themselves!

Staging these sites under the EOP & circumventing fedramp means we can’t see who’s doing what, who’s writing the code, etc - things required for govt sites. This is scary stuff. They could fabricate voter registration fraud and use it to throw out votes, for example, and we couldn’t check it. END/

People in the UK are often very, very convinced they never need cooling, tumble dryers, or in a lot of cases, dishwashers. Like it's a hill they're willing to die on without really understanding why.

I suspect it's because the vast majority of UK heat pump installations are not heating/cooling air, but partnered with radiator systems that previously used a gas boiler. In a humid environment (like the UK) running cooling to metal radiators would create a lot of problems with mo(u)ld.

Im filling out DBS paperwork in England.. why do instructions still include BRP? Those were deprecated as an ID in like 2024. At least this list also mentions eVisa, but a lot of paperwork I've encountered this year doesn't! Disturbing that services specifically working with this aren't up to date

I'm not surprised but I am baffled that "whiny, self-absorbed, untrustworthy, amoral, clearly no principles or sense of duty" is routinely labeled as "masculine." It's like they read scholarly articles on the interwoven nature of masculinity and toxic masculinity and decided "just the toxic parts."

Of all the harm this administration has done to US science, today's proposed changes to the way federal grants are awarded and administered is the most damaging yet. The text of the federal register document is impenetrably tedious by design, so here's an excellent summary of what it says.

This is incredibly tragic. I had the pleasure of speaking at an MIT Libraries event last month and got to see the good work the do and the community they support. For a university of this caliber to shutter this many of its libraries--this is truly a travesty.

UC Berkeley Law creates new AI policy that bans AI for "conceptualizing, outlining, drafting, revising, translating, or editing any work submitted for credit" or exams because "thinking remains the sine qua non of good lawyering (and of a quality legal education)." That's what I'm talking about.
Rule:
The use of AI is prohibited for aid in conceptualizing, outlining, drafting, revising,
translating, or editing any work submitted for credit. AI use is prohibited for any use for
any purpose in any exam situation. Students may not upload course
materials—including assignments, readings, slides, class recordings, or other class
content—into generative AI systems. AI can be used for research on papers ONLY for the
limited purpose of identifying sources, such as cases, statutes, or secondary sources.
Students are responsible for the accuracy of their research and all other aspects of their
submitted work. Citations to sources that do not exist will raise a presumption of
prohibited AI use

I've been trying to wrap my head around a different grading system as have moved to the UK. They do high stakes testing of teens, but those tests aren't just normalized, they are curved. So a proportion always fails, even if they have ok mastery. Limiting grades hurts the top and the bottom, both.

This right here is one of the many reasons we need to move away from a pathological model for neurodiversity. They do not accept that their 'quirky' or 'particular' or 'passionate' looks slightly different now and often gets a label that reflects the internal struggle that comes with it.

When a regime clearly holds the rule of law in contempt, and views itself as completely above the law, it and its agents don’t have any moral argument for the protections of the rule of law.

Thanks. I find it odd and I'm trying not to worry about it, but part of why this strain hasn't been more of a problem is that it has previously stayed pretty geographically contained. Most humans are always within a few meters of rodents and just never realize it

Katy @morgalyn.bsky.social · 17/05/2026
Don't feel like doing the song and dance to read the whole thing from NYT, but I want to find somewhere that discusses what happens if the Andes strain goes into other local rodent populations as reservoir. That is my primary concern with this outbreak.

interesting rationale from a prospective juror in the Elon Musk Twitter stock manipulation case
Judge Breyer: Okay. Thank you very much. Juror 96, I think that you also have strong views. Could you set them aside?

Juror 96: I believe that in a criminal trial, I would feel morally obligated to convict. However, in a civil trial, I feel I can set those views aside.

Judge Breyer: That’s interesting.

Juror 96: I’m happy to expand.

Judge Breyer: Sure.

Juror 96: I believe it would be to the benefit of the human race were Mr. Musk to be sent to prison. However, I don’t believe a loss of several hundreds of millions of dollars in a civil trial would be even a drop in the bucket to his wealth, so it doesn’t really matter. Therefore, I would be able to consider the facts.

Its my understanding they think the human transmissibility is respiratory, yes. I guess you could say the HV more familiar in the US is also respiratory, because it's from breathing in dessicated rodent excretions.

The Andes strain still uses rodents as a reservoir species. The major difference vs other HV strains is that it has confirmed human to human transmissibility. It was previously contained to the Andes with one 34 person outbreak in Argentina outside the usual area.

Meanwhile, it's now broken geographic containment and can take up residence in rodent species around the globe. Which means more outbreaks in the future.

Its been confirmed for a while that this variant is human communicable, which is why there was any concern at all about the cruise ship outbreak. What bothers me is that it also uses rodents as a reservoir species, and hadn't broken geographic containment until now.

I blame the collapse of major news journalism. I feel like decades ago, the main news was primarily factual reporting with minimal commentary, but it's been replaced by primarily commentary with minimal factual reporting. News ethics collapsed under the burden of profit seeking.
