GiveDirectly has sent $1 billion in cash directly to people in extreme poverty. Their model has no middle man and study after study shows it works. Any billionaire could call them tomorrow and help pull an entire country out of poverty. For some, it would cost about a year in the stock market.

They always use the word "brigade" when it's a group of people who disagree with them but who are right. This reads like "House fire is exactly what fire brigade wants" no they have just been telling you not to fry chips while drunk for the last 50 years.

The tree being cut down today started growing before the pyramids were built. Before the Roman Empire. Before written history. We aren’t just "logging timber." We are executing beings that have survived millennia, simply because they can’t run. 1% of original old-growth remains. Protect it.

Thank you! At an event last night I said "If the word hope doesn't work for you try, 'Never fucking surrender.'" The word hope seems too sunny to a lot of people, but the heart of it as I'm interested in it is: we make the future in the present, if we show up, and that never surrender part.

The world energy shock is coming — it will deepen inequality in ways we've seen before. Our new @newstatesman1913.bsky.social piece argues that without urgent government action, the Strait of Hormuz crisis will ripple through our economies and rip apart our societies. Here's why. 1/

Yes 👍 I personally think there are only a handful of AI applications which are ethical, like rapid and early bushfire detection I don’t use AI, and I don’t believe it’s inevitable. We always have a choice.

If it were me, I would find a way to make it clear that ethics isn’t something external - it isn’t a statement on their website with their values - it’s inside each and every one of us, and it requires some kind of training. And I would - very gently so as not to shock - talk about consequences

The betrayal of the environment really bites. Alcoa’s so called unprecedented fine of $55mln (a day’s work) then gets to keep strip mining and killing the only jarrah forest in the world. It’s the cherry on top of a mountain of political shit.

In Albo's new antisemitism bill, the definition of "hate crime", which underpins the new regime to proscribe "hate groups" like the Nazis, specifically excludes "advocating genocide". That is, advocating genocide is treated as not being a racist hate crime. Now, why would that be?

I think it’s just too difficult for many people to deal with the painful realization that they’re part of a race that is destroying the earth. Bill Moyers calls it the juvenile society - deliberately so to make sure we’re stupid and buy lots without thinking of the future

I can sense you don’t live in Australia and know nothing about First Nations? Their culture and way of living is way more evolved than the hunter gatherer cliche suggests. They were much healthier and happier than the Europeans who colonized them

I used to think like that, until I moved to Australia and learned about Aboriginal First Nations. Lived in harmony with nature and each other, lived long healthy lives full of art and celebrations, for over 60.000 years. And that is in ALL our history

I live in Australia where the indigenous peoples have lived for 60.000 years in harmony with each other and nature. We’re lucky much of their culture has survived and there are Elders who share their wisdom. Their rule number one: never regard yourself as better than anyone or anything else.

As for biodiversity, a brand new study also confirms what's well established: overall ruminant meat, especially from grazing animals (which require more land, entailing more carbon & biodiversity opportunity costs) has the biggest 'extinction footprint' of all foods: www.nature.com/articles/s43...
