All I want in life is a nefarious sexy arch nemesis with whom I share an attraction so strong it is infuriating (because we hate each other)

I've seen similar descriptions/attitudes to people reading Cormac McCarthy and my knee jerk response is that men arent reading and writing them 'as much' because these books are not, and never were, big muscular super macho epics and actually spent time disassembling masculinity.

You joined in and doubled down you stupid fucker and I chose the reply that both of you can see. Either go be a better person or be a little bitch somewhere else.

*pulling my fine walnut bubble pipe out of my mouth* I was being homophobic because I saw someone else doing it, little lady

No you see I started talking about men wanting to read masculine books about other men being gay is because someone else also suggested it was gay. Sorry if you were too stupid to understand we were talking about gays when you were pointing out people cant see sexism without calling it gay.

They're always too busy tripping over themselves to be rude to women to read what those women have actually written, and just double down on making asses of themselves. You can really tell when people have never had anything demanded of them or any standards for their thought processing.

Fluoroantimonic Acid @moralconstraints.bsky.social · 9h
Point out guys are being homophobic and they respond by being condescending lmao, can't make it up

Does he also think its a biological reality that men apparently arent remotely put out by gang rape scenes but women can be unless there's some well written women to cheer them up either side?
030
Fluoroantimonic Acid @moralconstraints.bsky.social · 9h
Why do boys not want to be around girls? Why do they not want to be taught by women? Why do they not want to engage with anything made by women? Why do they not want to be associated with anthing girls their own age like? Why do male writers get to leave it as "biological reality"?
130
Fluoroantimonic Acid @moralconstraints.bsky.social · 9h
why can none of you ever think about men being misogynist and gender essentialist without you becoming homophobic about them? Why do you always link being sexist with being gay?
100
Fluoroantimonic Acid @moralconstraints.bsky.social · 9h
Have to appreciate how there is absolutely zero consideration in the whole thing for why boys only want to be around other boys and men and only consume things not touched by girls or women. Shrugs; it's biological ie built in, inevitable, innate and not at all deliberately driven in to them.

Then dont read the book but you've completely missed the point of what ive written here, I am not complaining about the fact there is a rape in a classic western novel

Yeah I'll see if I can dig up some of the studies - we can NOT stop putting very well behaved golden retrievers in machines that scan their brains while they look at the humans they love, its great. You are going to realise at some point your dog has learned how to manipulate you and its WONDERFUL

Hey can we stop here for a second and consider how blase this writer is saying gang rapes in books can only affect how one half a population enjoy what they're reading, because that's kindof a big deal.
130
Fluoroantimonic Acid @moralconstraints.bsky.social · 9h
Sorry its fading out I went to go back and grab the full page as I saw the fade and then I read the line WOMEN CAN STILL ENJOY IT DESPITE THE GANG RAPE, WHICH HAS NO AFFECT ON HOW MUCH MEN ENJOY READING IT APPARENTLY
120
Fluoroantimonic Acid @moralconstraints.bsky.social · 9h
Women can enjoy it despite the gang rape, which men arent bothered by at all. Anyway, here's the rest of the article. This is not a rhetorical question - why am I seeing no one else flag up the world's worst quote?
120
Fluoroantimonic Acid @moralconstraints.bsky.social · 9h
Women can enjoy it just as much as men despite a vicious gang rape in the novel? Sorry, what the fuck kind of attitude is this man normalizing about gang rape and men? Why isn't this the quote people are putting up front and centre? He's literally saying gang rape is more appealing to men?

I WAS AVOIDING THE WHOLE ARTICLE SO I DID NOT REALISE THAT CITING LONESOME DOVE AS THE BIG BLOODY MALE CODED LITERARY NOVEL WAS THE FUCKING LEAD IN
Screenshot of the start of hopefully the worst article I will read today;

'The Strange Resurrection of Lonesome Dove'
By
Ross Barkan
Larry McMurtry’s 1985 cowboy epic is finding a new generation of readers online. Its revival raises an awkward question for publishing: What happened to the big, bloody, male-coded literary novel and to the men who used to read and write them?
380
Fluoroantimonic Acid @moralconstraints.bsky.social · 9h
and citing the genre of fiction who's most enduring pieces are ones that absolutely fucking abhor "traditional" masculinity and violence. What have I just read. Lonesome Dove!!! How do you write that sentence about Lonesome Dove!!!!!

Incredible work writing a western where the white guy ~assimilates~ with native americans so he can be with... a white woman. Mary McDonnell I love you please forgive me.
050
Fluoroantimonic Acid @moralconstraints.bsky.social · 9h
Modern and progressive criticisms still nail it to the post (white saviour narrative about a white guy being saved, somehow two white people 'becoming' native americans and ending up together lmao) but it's hero was a Union officer trying to die fighting Confederates - but union ones become villains
140
Fluoroantimonic Acid @moralconstraints.bsky.social · 9h
Even Dances with Wolves - which is possibly the softest and closest you'd get to what these people are imagining the Great Western to be - was about how much white americans were a racist blight and the violence they wrought nothing more than mindless destruction.

Fluoroantimonic Acid @moralconstraints.bsky.social · 9h
Lmao no

But then you have to compare those ideas of “pretty neat” compared to what the loudest critics of masculine depictions think is “pretty neat” in modern times. (And I say loud because it really is loudest rather than majority)

YOU WILL NOT FIND A SINGLE RESPECTED WESTERN NOVEL THAT ISNT ABOUT HOW BEING A MAN IS SHIT BECAUSE VIOLENCE AND EMOTIONAL NUMBNESS IS FORCED ON THEM BY THE WILDERNESS THEY FEEL TRAPPED IN AND WHAT LITTLE SOCIETY THEY HAVE AROUND THEM THAT'S WHY DUDES DONT WRITE OR READ GOOD ONES ANYMORE
1274
Fluoroantimonic Acid @moralconstraints.bsky.social · 10h
ahh but knowing what the classic westerns are about would involve reading them - and not just ~knowing~ that they're classic westerns and therefore about the classing masculine hero in a cowboy hat saving the day
000
Fluoroantimonic Acid @moralconstraints.bsky.social · 10h
Blood Meridian is always the one that comes to mind for me whenever anything like this comes up because I remember a weird run of "WHY DOES NO ONE MAKE BOOKS LIKE THIS ANYMORE ABOUT REAL MEN AND HOW COOL WE ARE" and I turned into a human question mark

Fluoroantimonic Acid @moralconstraints.bsky.social · 10h
this isnt true and has been debunked - dogs display these behaviours to each other when they accidentally injure or break things their dog buddies care about. This is one of those "swinging too far the other way" facets - scientists are pretty sure they have mirror neurons like we do, etc etc

Watching male audiences have tantrums any time the character they relate to isnt the greatest most competent and succesful human in the world and then wondering why we dont have more books dissecting the reality of violence, physical and emotional, on those men

Fluoroantimonic Acid @moralconstraints.bsky.social · 10h
*frothing at the mouth* The actual great western novels are amazing and it's such a shame how many people are put off reading them because so many (men) are hell bent on these bizarre gender essential fascist-lite remembrances of media. Lonesome Dove is great. Blood Meridian is great. Youll cry.
2232
Fluoroantimonic Acid @moralconstraints.bsky.social · 10h
lonesome dove possibly the funniest Great Western novel they could've chosen for this point. Maybe Blood Meridian.
150
Fluoroantimonic Acid @moralconstraints.bsky.social · 10h
Lonesome Dove is a very direct rebuke of the traditional, shallow idea of the cowboy western! It's a tragedy about men causing themselves and others avoidable pain because they're trapped in cages built out of traditional masculinity!
1241
Fluoroantimonic Acid @moralconstraints.bsky.social · 10h
Those books went to great paints to put violence, the west and versions of masculinity on display but without making them yeehaw fun times "real men lead and win with brute force" that people are evidently still presuming any western would be. Hard to read Lonesome Dove and come away amped up!
