Call me a masochist, but I'm returning to this issue, as I feel it has been poorly understood. Please read the whole thread before responding. First, I hope we can agree that the Israeli government is committing genocide in Gaza and horrific crimes in the West Bank and the wider region.

However also inflation has hidden some of this success and it is starting to have some success. Scrapping it now effectively wastes most of that cost (other than for the few who did get heat pumps directly). Scaling it in a few years potentially sensible.

The idea of the scheme is that is accelerates the move of Air source heat pump to mass market. The increases in scale will help drive down prices and allow mass electrification. This was not looking very successful partly due to the stop start approach of other schemes (Eco 4, Lad, HUG)

There nothing I would like cut in DESNZ budget (which already seems underfunded for the task). However these cuts seem particularly poorly timed. Not just as with gas prices rising they look more attractive, the climate emergency and the urgent energy security need. It is also starting to work.

Yes in every political question some people disagree and people making decisions need to consider their reactions. That is almost the defination. In this example campaigning to stop genocide in Gaza does not mean opposition to UK Jewish life. We don't need to take this route. It was a choice

I proposed amendment 3 to my eternal regret making this situation worse when it was voted down. I apologise for my failure to stop this. To elected greens who will lose, to fellow Jews once again caught in this storm. To those, including the Palestinians, who would benefit from green policies.

It refights the battle in Labour in 2018 (and we know those ended in success for everyone). Greens4palestine the main group pushing the motion hardly ever post about events in West Asia or what they want the government to do. It is about people in the UK they feel have been silenced

This I have to feel is the point. It is a form of activism that is not about creating a broad coalition to achieve policy objectives. Or even a narrow one push for a clear goal. This refocuses the debate on discourse in UK and the makes the UK activists main characters.

It is also highly damaging to Jews. Over the past year the pro-Palestine movement and the Green Party in particular have been adapt at disassociating Jews from Zionism and the actions of Israel. The reaction to this predicably relinks these and recentres the UK Jewish community in this debate.

Greens get attacked in a way we have not done before, we become internally divided on ground that we know is difficult for a left wing party. We lose elections. If you think Greens electoral success makes action against Israeli government more likely then this motion makes this less likely.

That not my recollection. As we have seen now unfortunately Zionism is very much associated with Jews. As mentioned most synagogues are Zionist, the majority of Jews are Zionists and I suspect in this country the majority of Zionists are Jews. All of us have had the insult Zionist thrown at us

Sam Alston @moosealston.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
In all the years never discussed if you define as a Zionist or not, which shows how little it should matter. Genocide, ethnic cleansing are bad and states should act to stop them was a pretty strong argument and formed a pretty broad coalition

I would agree, but I brought an amendent to ensure no one could say that (a amendment we dicussed months ago and I know wish I had never proposed). Conferance voted it down. For some people in that room it clearly was about us. I dont know what to do about that but forgetting not the answer.

My reflections this morning, some thoughts on how we build back better from here, and a message to members and constituents. 💚🙏
Sian Berry
Green Party MP for Brighton Pavilion
This morning, in what I know is a very initial and uncomprehensive way, I want to offer some of my personal reflections and thoughts on what we do now, in the wake of both conference, last night's by-election, and following the many powerful and heartfelt messages I have received from residents, constituents and party members in recent days.
I am full of regret for so much that has happened, and very sad Zack is not joining me in Parliament next week. Sincere congratulations to Sagal on winning her seat too.
On the motion, I voted and argued against it because I felt it needed serious amendment, and if not then sending back for more dialogue or voting down. But the clash of conference with an exciting and mobilising by-election campaign meant many of us were persuaded not to campaign publicly for these ends, while proposers were very organised and remained intent upon no changes at all.
I want to take my full share of personal responsibility for the result of all this in the votes at conference. I should have worked harder to persuade more of our leading figures to speak up in a unified way to say that the motion as written was clearly not reflective of our values and policy principles.
Both in the words of the motion and in how they have been heard in the country, I can hear genuine worry about what it means for our communities, and can see genuine damage being done to our strong reputation as a leading, principled and inclusive voice for human rights in Palestine and against the atrocities of the Israeli state.
I regret this hugely, and apologise to members and constituents for where we are now as a party, which I know is causing real concern. To Green Party members - especially those for whom thoughts of leaving must have crossed their minds in recent days - I say please stay and let us fix this together.
I am very glad that Zack has now said that he would have voted against the motion as it stood, and that he has agreed we have work now to do. We are not at all where we want to be today, but I know we can build from this starting point if we work together in a new spirit.
I stand ready to work with all my colleagues to restore trust in our processes and our party, fix the serious flaws in the motion that was passed, as well as to restore key policies aimed at inclusive peace-building.
And my principles dictate that I will always want to help find a way to do this work through understanding, listening and consensus building.
To my constituents, I want to reassure you this morning that the party's currently stated policy on this issue does not reflect my values, and that it will make no difference to the inclusive way in which I represent our fantastic, diverse, kind and inclusive community here in Brighton.
With love and respect to all, I look forward to important conversations taking place in the coming days and weeks to find a way to make sure our party is again a unified, enthusiastic and very clear voice for understanding, peace and human rights for all people.

I wish this motion had not passed, I wish we are not having this conversation. However are watching our party being torn apart by this decision. It is not helped by attacking Jewish members opposing the motion. Lets be honest and not double down defending a flawed motion after the event.

The motion background contains a number of more troubling elements as @yairwallach.bsky.social extensively highlighted. Many pro Palestinian activities seem appalled by our move to focus on a one state solution rather than opposition to genocide.

Sam Alston @moosealston.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
A focus on identifying enemies within and Zionist will inevitably focus on Jews. The motion proposers have been very unclear on rejecting this position and rejecting a chance on conference floor widely seen as allowing it. It is entirely legitimate for Jewish Greens to be concerned regardless

This motion has seen the Green Party condemned by almost the entire Jewish left including groups like Nammod, Diaspora Alliance and the Movement for Progressive Judaism. Conference had a chance to make clear this was not about synagogues and the Jewish community in the UK. They did not.

I am very saddened that Zionism is Racism motion has passed. I was on the list as the next speaker against the motion, but was not called. I wrote two different speeches depending on whether the amendment protecting Jewish members was passed. Here they are below:
If A3 fails:
Joshua Alston, Leeds Green Party, I am a Jewish antizionist.
I joined Jewish Greens in 2018 because of an incident in my local party. Four members of my local party signed a letter accusing me of being a Zionist and a mossad agent because of a position I took in defence of trans rights. It was nothing to do with Israel.
They assumed I was a Zionist because I was a Jew who disagreed with them. I’ve been called a Zionist dozens of time since then.
As an antizionist Jew I have to fight twice as hard, be twice as loud and obnoxious to be persuade people that I am an anti-Zionist and for some people it just isn’t enough.
For non-Jews this isn’t a question that gets asked. If you search Zack Polanski is a Zionist you get loads of hits. No-one says Mothin or Rachel are Zionists.
So I am worried about this motion. I don’t think anti-Zionism is racism. I am an anti-Zionist. But I do think there’s a double standard in society.
Some people say Zionist when they mean Jew.
I know the proposers and trust that they don’t think like this. But most of the rest of the country won’t trust them. They will think awful things of us.
There is another way. We could declare that anti-Palestinian racism and Islamophobia are racisms. We vote for E03 and focus on the material changes that we need for Palestinian freedom. We can focus on stopping the genocide. We can focus on BDS. We can stand up against the proscription of Palestine action.
The Green Party vision is a world where all are free. This takes us backwards. We should vote it down.
If A3 does pass:
Josh Alston. I’m from Leeds Green Party. I am a Jewish anti-Zionist who has spent most of my adult life talking to the Jewish community about Israel, and helping build coalitions for Palestinian liberation.
In my community 64% of people describe themselves as Zionists, but only 12% are pro-Netanyahu. They have criticisms of Israeli racism, but they still call themselves Zionists.
So what do they think?
They like the idea of a place Jews can go in the event of a genocide in Europe, but don’t like the way Israel treats Palestinians. I see this as an opportunity. We’re a party about organising. We’re a party about convincing people.
So how do we talk people round?
Any organiser knows we start from points of connection and the material conditions in Palestine. We start from disgust at the genocide. We talk about settlements. We talk about BDS. We talk about corruption. We talk about apartheid. We talk about Israel’s connection with the far-right. We talk about impunity. We talk about how we can make Jews safe without an ethnostate.
If we start by calling them racist, we will lose those people and they won’t come back.
There are real stakes here. We’ve seen a genocide live streamed in front of eyes. With this profound evil, if someone thinks that the idea of a Zionism, the idea of a Jewish national homeland in Palestine can be separated from the reality of Israel’s as a state I .think they are wrong. But that’s not the most important question for the Green Party.
The question is ‘what are you going to do to stop the genocide and make Palestine free?’
Let’s organise not exclude and build a coalition for a free Palestine. Thank you.

“Zionism is racism” is not a policy but a slogan. It compresses a complex history, going back millennia, and a very wide set of beliefs into one narrow meaning. The answer to genocide is not discrimination. We don't fight racism with racism. I’m gutted to see this motion adopted by the Green Party.
