Mystery solved! We’ve officially identified Seat H12 in the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall as the spot where Shostakovich sat for his 1970s UK premiere at York. We’ll be marking this historic spot permanently later this year. For now, hear the full story on BBC Radio 3: tinyurl.com/bddwu3e8 🎻

At the front of the hall, a large pipe organ is built into the wall. A grand piano stands in the centre of the stage. The exterior of the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall on a sunny day. I am all for this anti-stigmatisation of crying in workplaces as a release, sign of frustration, expression of emotion etc. But I am also very much for workplaces that don't make you cry. This seems to be getting forgotten in our rush to share all the crying stories...

‘Plants have got all the solutions to all the world problems...’ Today we went from vertical farming to anti-malarial plants, from finding new ways to extract more valuable oil from plants to the potential of hemp farming. A world tour in a fancy greenhouse. 🌱🌿🌾 #YorkResearch #PlantBiology
A line of green crops in plastic containers in a lab, against a whitewashed wall with a tin can of what looks like plant food hanging above with a tube connecting it to the plants below. Rows and rows of potted seedlings with rainbow coloured labels, in trays along the length of a large industrial looking greenhouse. Someone in a blue lab coat reaches out to inject the leaf one of the plants on a trolley of specimens.A large industrial fridge unit, open. On each of the two shelves sit seedlings in test tubes, steadied by bright red trays.

Salts Mill, Saltaire, Bradford, UK.
A dinner plate with a line drawing of a dog on it, saying ‘Salts diner’ A view out of the window towards a tower with hills in the background. In the foreground is the Victorian factory roof of the mill. Some sort of red, weighing device of similar used in a Victorian industrial setting. It has a big white face like a clock but it isn’t. Totally amazing Ann Hamilton exhibition at Salts Mill, Saltaire, up in the eaves of the building.Part of Bradford City of Culture 2025.
Yards and yards of cornflower blue material is draped at one end of a large industrial room with glass windows in the roof and a factory chimney in the distance. A megaphone on a stand. It’s just a picture but the megaphone spins round and plays beautiful music, there are two more in he background of this industrial space. Containers of sheep’s fleeces all piled up in a dark room. Woolly. Another part of the factory eaves, this time with some contemporary art installations of hanging furniture, lights, newspapers and cloaks hanging.

Excellent visit to @peacemuseumuk.bsky.social in Saltaire, Bradford. Thoughtful, interesting, bursting with ideas, and lots of activities for kids. ⭐️

Hanging above is a sign saying ‘Peace Museum.’ A great many origami birds of all colours and patterns in the foreground, with exhibition displays about peace in the background. A small child gets hands on badge-making with paper, pens and rubber stamps.Colourful banners installed with messages of peace activism on them, they hang above a small but beautiful exhibition space.

The comedy industry, and the world to be honest, was a far nicer place for having Al in it. Al was such a gentle, silly man who was one of the most proactive people I’ve ever know - in comedy, politics and environmental matters. What a loss this is, but his impact will last forever. RIP sweet Al 💚
A Facebook post by The Crescent Community Venue. It shows a photos of Al, who is wearing a red beanie cap and clear-framed glasses, next to beautiful pink flowers. Below reads the statement “Last week we learned of the passing of our friend and colleague Alistair Greaves, who left us suddenly on Wednesday 8th January.

Many will know Al as the brains behind York-based independent comedy producers Burning Duck Comedy. With a genuine love for an oddball sense of humour, Al brought a widely eclectic programme of artists to York & Leeds over an eleven-year period, from it’s initial home in the upstairs room of The Black Swan, to The Basement in The City Screen Picturehouse before finding more permanent regular home’s here at The Crescent and Theatre41 on Monkgate. Al was a brilliant promoter, open-minded and art focused.

Working on his events would often involve long conversations about a new sound on his synthesizer, the layout of his allotment, a fab new vegan restaurant in town, or highly enthusiastic (and often very silly!) new ideas for hosting live comedy.

Al was also keenly engaged in politcs. He was a member of the Labour Party and more recently the Green Party with whom Al helped with fundraising and canvassing. He was considered and principled, but above all loved to engage in conversation with others, a beautiful humanist.

We will all miss him very much. Our thoughts are with his friends and family.”
