It has been 60 years since the Aberfan disaster of 1966, but memories of corporate failings and injustice persist.

My new book has a cover! The folks @columbiaup.bsky.social did a fantastic job. It captures one of the book's key arguments on the relationship between an 'everyday technology' of American mobility, the US frontier, and empire. Look for it on store shelves just in time for Bike Month 2027.

Quite right in Yoko's case as well! A film each about Yoko, Linda, Pattie, and Maureen would, honestly, feel way more exciting to me than the stuff being cooked up! Maybe that'll be the focus? Tomorrow Never Knows?

Why are car-centric transport systems so difficult to undo? Because automobiles represent the dominance of private property over public space. In this @urbancyclinginstitute.org essay, I look to history to uncover how we got here. #StealingCars

I do know I let ones through when I should have known better (often when I am less familiar with a subject). Sometimes with good intentions (feedback needed). It is a skill to develop as well.

You are right, of course, and know I have been guilty of using general templates produced by publishers, esp when I did not personally know a potential reviewer. There are some journals where I have had very good experiences and others less so.

I also agree with this and it's something I should have had greater appreciation about. I hope I got better after a few years editing. Our processes were very thoughtful in finding reviewers, but presented as a mechanical exercise.

Periodic reminder from ex-journal editor that if we all turn down peer review requests, nothing will be reviewed and things grind to a halt. Clear that job losses, workload in the sector are having a pinching effect. Any room for (£££) publishers to hire human reviewers to help?

Is the UK's science base being eroded by policy, or by sleepwalking? As Britons head to the polls, it's timely to recall the hustings at the Royal Society before the last GE. All 3 parties there pledged to support science, & confirmed that included SHAPE disciplines. 1/9

On the latter point... it does sort of implicitly suggest we do need to understand and teach the limits of this stuff. But also, I wonder where the more inappropriate use of the tech is in the sector, and suspect it's not in student essays/coursework.
