Setting & working toward realistic & personally meaningful goals every day supports our self-esteem, which supports us in everything else we're doing in our trauma recovery. Daily rituals, goals, & self-care are the front line in realistic trauma recovery. Don't ever doubt it.

It is never the wrong moment in the day or in your life to decide you're going to relate to yourself more compassionately & realistically. CPTSD tries to convince us we need a big, dramatic "turnaround moment." No we don't. Any given moment will do. Like this one.

The aftereffects of abuse, neglect, & other trauma don’t just distort our thinking or hurt our feelings— they get hard wired into the physical cells & reflexes of our body. It's why physical movement and soothing is so central to CPTSD recovery.

Your quality of life is important enough to not spend one more second than necessary tolerating a person or a situation that makes you feel like sh*t. No matter what that voice from your past is whispering in your ear— or screaming in your face— as you read this.

The world out there is full of people who only value us for how we can profit them. That sucks, but it's reality. And it can get particularly triggering for CPTSD survivors who grew up only being valued for how we could please, obey, or arouse adults who should have protected us.

"They" will likely never understand-- what you experienced, what you need, what you deserve, what you can do. We have to stop hoping that someday, somehow, they will. Assume they'll never get it, and build from there. It's a little sad-- but a lot liberating.

When we grow up feeling unwanted, misunderstood, & rejected in the relationships that were supposed to be our safest, you bet we're going to be vulnerable to toxic relationships-- romantic, professional, & "spiritual"-- that offer us "acceptance." Grace over guilt. It happens.

CPTSD & DID aren't just "in your head." There are biological patterns, including hormonal spikes & dips (regardless of gender, by the way) that heavily impact how we process-- or don't-- past trauma. Recovery often involves learning more about our physical body than we ever knew.

You don't "have" to feel, or not feel, anything in order to be "worthy" of belief, care, & respect. You don't have to be the "perfect" survivor. You don't have to feel "hopeful." CPTSD survivors often carry a lifetime of rigid demands & expectations-- more won't heal us.

There will absolutely be people who feel abandoned by you as you work your recovery & level up in your life-- & that sucks, but you can't put your recovery on "pause" for their comfort. Your healing is going to activate wounds in them that only they-- not you-- can heal.

This is a reminder that feeling like garbage in this moment doesn't mean you're "failing," at either life or trauma recovery. Easy does it. Breathe into that vagus nerve; blink blink blink; & keep bringing your focus back to who you are & what actually matters to you.

If we're going to meaningfully recover from trauma, we're going to have to be okay w/ being misunderstood & probably misrepresented. There are people who are not interested in truly seeing us or meeting us where we are-- & we have to let that have nothing to do w/ our recovery.

The key to being realistically less afraid on a day to day basis is reminding ourselves of our absolute commitment to staying present, having our own back, being on our own side. No "hack" is ever going to replace showing up for ourselves w/ compassion & consistency.

We can't beat something w/ nothing. We can spend all day listing symptoms & memories we don't want, & that's part of trauma recovery. But we also have to develop a vision of what we DO want--who we want to be, what we want to feel, what values we want to align w/ in the world.

Paying attention to how we talk to ourselves can seem like an enormous pain in the ass-- until we realize we're talking to ourselves all day, every day, anyway. All trauma recovery is asking us to do is to do it on purpose, using language & tone we, not our abusers, choose.

Did you ask for a bird fact? No, but you're getting one whether you like it or not. 🪶
Photo, by David Larson, of a female Northern Yellow Warbler peering out of her nest with an (anthropomorphized) irritated expression on her face. Text on the graphic says "Unsolicited Bird Fact: Northern Yellow Warblers are frequently parasitized by
Brown-headed Cowbirds and female warblers have a specific strategy when they spot a female cowbird
looking for a nest to lay an egg in. Gill and Sealy
(1996) found that female Northern Yellow Warblers give special "seet" calls then rush back to their nest and sit tightly and silently in it
when they see a cowbird on the prowl. But when a nest predator is spotted they give more
"chip" alarm calls and perform distraction
displays.

Executive dysfunction, especially difficultly making decisions & getting or staying motivated, is common w/ CPTSD survivors. It has nothing to do w/ "willpower"-- it has everything to do w/ the fact that our nervous system is highly vulnerable to hijacking & dissociation.

Having no hobbies & taking no time to read & listen to things we like for no reason other than we like them, is an excellent way to stall & flame out in trauma recovery. We need as much dopamine & serotonin as we can get in this process. The things we like are recovery tools.

Realistic trauma recovery work very often requires us to move between light & shadow. We need our hope, yes-- but we also need our darkness, our edge, even some aspects of our scars & pain. "Integration" in recovery work does not mean banishing any "part" of us. Ever.

Weather and climate are connected, but they are not the same. Weather is what we experience day to day. Climate is the longer-term patterns that help explain what is changing, what is becoming more likely, and what communities may need to prepare for. Climate.us helps make those connections clearer.
