I know we been discussing the quality of Kendrick’s hatred but I’m invested in how he embraces obsession. One of my fears as a creator is being staying stuck on the same idea for too long. Sharing the same poem too many times. Writing about the same topic for too many projects.

!!! This convo started because folks were acting super elitist about reading vs. listening to audiobooks. I really understand wanting to expand the definition to avoid ableism and stigma. We can talk about the issues with elitism without redefining literacy.

It doesn’t mean they can walk. Their disability prevents them from walking because walking requires the use of your legs. They are able to move from point a to point b but their disability changes how that happens. I don’t think that accessibility requires that we change the definitions of things.

I’ll also toss in that many blind or visually impaired folks read braille which is reading. I think my argument is that disability doesn’t change the function of the word. I have a family member who is disabled and is unable to walk so they use a wheelchair. The wheelchair allows them to move but

I understand the desire to categorize it as reading so there isn’t stigma for those who use audiobooks because of disability or access to time which is tied to privilege but feel like it’s misguided. Some folks are illiterate. That doesn’t become less true because audiobooks exist.

Audiobooks make stories and information more accessible which is great. It helps folks with disabilities (like me!). But, it functions different than reading even though you are receiving the same information. Literacy as a fundamental skill is declining when we need it the most.

I’m an audiobook lover and educator. I don’t believe listening to audiobooks is reading. While I don’t think one activity is more moral/valid, I do think we’re facing a serious literacy crisis and the insistence that they are the same is dangerous. Literacy rates are abysmal and this will impact us.

One of my mentors would tell me “it would be unkind of me to lie to you” whenever he gave feedback on my poems. I am so much better for the days I’ve spent tending my grief after people who meant me well refused to lie to me with niceties.
