I think both styles have plenty to offer. I just also think this guy is very representative of many, people who play the game the way they want and justify it how they like, not realizing the difference isn’t in the games at all. It’s inside them.

In fact, he claims old-school gives you greater freedom to roleplay your character by not letting you build your character how you like. What he doesn’t realize he’s saying is that he ignores the build he’s given, and modern gaming forces him to examine the build more.

His entire mentality seems to be based around the idea that modern games take away your freedom due to giving you preconceived notions of what characters can and can’t do. But they only add to characters. He’s imagined this flaw that’s not there.

It’s a very important distinction, and one he doesn’t seem to realize is there. He’s conflating the way people play the game with the way the game asks to be played. This explains a Lot.

Recently reached Lord on my boy Loki, AND rewatched Avengers with my friends, so the only sensible way to honor both was to doodle one of my favorite shots from the movie, clearly.

The device attaches, and sparks fly from the panel with a KZZZZRT! This catches Willow’s attention again, while the hand swoops upwards out of sight. The lasers vanish instantly.
Willow: (SHIT!)
A pair of boots swings over Willow’s head, and the dramatic silhouette of the phantom thief leaps through the air with his grappling hook, and lands deftly in front of the pedestal.

You know, after years and years of 5e sourcebooks, I have to say that my favorite sourcebook that I continue to use is actually Ghosts of Saltmarsh. It has the best "home base" of any 5e sourcebook, I feel- I'll gladly port all the businesses when making new towns in a new campaign.

Used the dndbeyond custom subclass tools for the first time in a while so I could use a 3rd party one that didn't slip into the community 'homebrews'. I forgot how much crap they let you do with the customization. Official subclasses would never touch half of these options.

So far what I've got from the new Ravenloft book is that a lot of little tweaks were made that elevated different Darklords to a much better place as villains, and their Domains have more character now as well. Definitely makes me want to use some of them I didn't want to use from the last book.

It just now occurs to me that the Lorwyn Changeling species included in the Lorwyn expansion on dndbeyond could be so very easily reskinned as just "Pokopia Ditto." Shapeshifter easily recognized for what they are no matter what form they take? Yeah that checks out. Do with this what you will.

Been waiting to read Northlands until it was on dndbeyond, so now I get to be surprised by all the spells and monsters and class options. "Wotan's Retribution" spell has me wishing to see it used in a climactic boss fight. By the hero or the boss, I don't care which- I just want to taste the Drama.

Need to rework my Bystander species traits. Their main ability was gaining advantage on saving throws vs effects that require you to be aware of them, such as dragon fear or medusa gaze. 5.5e removed that requirement pretty much across the board, so, that trait will never trigger.
