How many times can the pendulum of mood swing in an hour? What if the pendulum doubles as a guillotine and you can’t keep your head off the desk any longer? A cat full of porcupine quills will famously cuddle at the kitchen table. There, there

Went for an owl walk in the woods. Saw some bats flitting about. Upon leaving the woods an owl flew into a tree which already contained a softly hooting owl. Some kewicking commenced. A few minutes later first one, and then the other, floated away into the post-sunset twilight 🌖🌿🦉

Wings so translucent are more aesthetic than appendage, but they work well enough in an emergency. And at night in the forest, emergencies do happen. The ears are her greatest asset. Overheard: everything
Character, or Personaje, a painting by Remedios Varo, shows a creature with transparent bat wings and a cat/mouse face floating on spindly legs through a forest at night.

Chelidonia was a recluse who made her home in a cave in Subiaco, Italy. Little is known about the life of this Benedictine, who lived until 1152
Illustration of Benedictine hermitess Chelidonia. There is a plant that resembles dandelion in the middle of the drawing that has gold flowers like stars. Two smaller figures are in either corner of the frame -- the one on the right is labeled in medieval script: Chelidonia. This is a hell mouth I embroidered and gave as a birthday gift to a very dear friend in May of 2020. It is based on an imagine from Hours of Catherine of Cleves, in Latin - MS M 945 fol-168v, detail held at The Morgan in NYC.
Embroidery on cream colored fabric in a 9” display hoop: medieval hell mouth that looks like a scary green muppet with bat wings for jaws, and sharp white fangs, inside this outer mouth is another mouth wreathed on red flames this second mouth frames to human figures and a hand reaching up from below one of the figures wears a mitre (pope hat). Close up on details of first image.

Olga of Kyiv aka That Bitch when the people who murdered her husband wanted her to marry their leader, she said ‘sounds great’ then buried them alive
Elegant depiction of Olga, now a Catholic saint, then, before AD 1000, a woman whose husband was murdered, who acted ruthlessly and violently to protect herself and her people. In this artwork, there are faint, slender, flowering trees in the background. Yoga is fair skinned, has beautiful eyes, and a strong nose, a crown, something of a halo, a cloak, and elaborate robes with patterns and gold accents. She’s holding a large cross

Santa Muerte by Roxanna Bikadoroff
Icon of Santa Muerte by Roxanna Bikadoroff. This is a panel with three parts. The middle is tallest and the two side panels angle down. Santa Muerte is depicted by artist Roxanna Bikadoroff as an angel-type figure in night-blue robes. Santa Muerte has massive white wings spreading out -- either a set of second black wings rise up from below or they're the shadow wings. Santa Muerte holds a sickle hook in one skeletal hand and a small planet globe in the other. She has a skeleton face and a pale blue head dress. The background of the panels is gold, possibly with a big silver moon behind Santa Muerte's head

Moses the Black, 330–405 AD has a hell of a story. For years he led an infamous 75-man band of robbers. But once, when he was running from the cops, monks in Wadi El Natrun sheltered him. Their peace moved him; he converted The integrity and thoughtfulness of his struggles with monk life inspire us
Painting of St. Moses the Ethiopian aka St. Moses the Black. Searing blue desert sky with a high sun in background. Moses is black, in cream colored robes with a gold halo. He has a sack of sand on his shoulder that's trailing sand, and a scroll in his right hand: "These sands are my sins, which are running down behind me and I cannot see them, and yet I have come this day to judge shortcomings that are not mine"

Saint Francis of Assisi was a prisoner of war for a year. He likely contracted malaria and TB in the prison camp. We know him as a friend to animals — but Francis also suffered from PTSD. He gets the pain and anguish of trauma disorders

She’s got a mortar and pestle at her neck and a tool for time or alchemy in one hand. Those stairs nod to the chthonic; her hair holds space for the celestial. This glowing, resonant corridor walker lives in La llamada (The Call) by Remedios Varo, 1961
The Call by Remedios Varo. An orange woman moves through a mystical corridor. She is in flowing robes and her hair and the robes. Both indicate that she’s moving quickly. Her hair is like a tornado that points upward. The walls have texture and are occupied by mute figures with closed eyes. They feel like trees. The floor has the texture of old New York City parquet floors.

today is Michaelmas, the feast of Archangel Michael. Pope Leo wrote the Saint Michael prayer in 1884 after having a vision — legions of demons attacking earth, Michael driving them back. In its original form, this prayer is an exorcism

May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, o prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Illumination from Scivias by Hildegard von Bingen. Beautiful, complex image. Red frame, pattern inside the frame, blue pattern inside that, and within the frame is a shape that could be an egg or an oval with hundreds of what could be petals. And a star or series of flowers at the top. There is a small head with a horn within the egg at the bottom. One might imagine Georgia O’Keeffe being inspired by work like this.
