Encroaching energy, mine concessions threaten protected ecosystems, research shows
Millions of hectares of protected tropical ecosystems are at risk from overlapping mining concessions ‌and oil and gas blocks, researchers said on Thursday, potentially weakening a global treaty aimed at conserving 30% of the world's land, freshwater and oceans by the end of the decade.

Fishermen along Latin America's Pacific coast are reeling in half-empty nets as ocean warming aggravated by El Nino causes tuna, anchovies and other top catches to migrate to cooler waters. In Panama, small-scale fishermen are struggling with extra fuel and ice costs.

2. Embed ocean targets across climate negotiations, not just on mitigation and adaptation but on finance and implementation. 3. Increase investment in ocean observation - an essential service to detect change earlier, anticipate risks more accurately and turn scientific evidence into timely action

Karina highlights three core actions for ocean-climate diplomacy: 1. Transition away from fossil fuels. This means both cutting the emissions that are warming our seas and the pollution that is wrecking havoc of marine ecosystems.

I commend the effort, but I find it fascinating that in most "future US climate policy" thought pieces there is rarely a section on nature (land & ocean) policy. As if we don't need to new ideas on how to conserve & restore the parts of our planet that are absorbing all our excess CO2 and heat.

This is possibly the worst thing they can do and will make fans less safe during heat events. In previous studies, we found cost of water, not enough free fountains, and long lines (e.g., standing in the sun), were all major barriers to reducing heat exposure. Players get water breaks... not fans.
