The government has announced new rules cracking down on misleading discounts and subscription traps. Here you can read our Chief Executive @helenundy.bsky.social’s reaction to these changes 👇
“Today’s announcement is good news – however, subscription traps and misleading discounts are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to unfair practices that make it harder to get a fair deal when you’re struggling with your mental health. We look forward to working with the government to see what further action can be taken in future.” – Helen Undy OBE, Chief Executive, Money and Mental Health

Online shopping can be a lifeline for people with mental health problems. But features like countdown clocks and scarcity messages can make it harder to stay in control - especially when symptoms like impulsivity or anxiety are heightened.

Reports suggest the government may allow councils to raise council tax above the 5% cap without a public vote. We’re urging them to first end the brutal way that councils collect missed payments, to avoid more people falling into harm. Our response 👉 www.moneyandmentalhealth.org/press-releas...
“Raising council tax will hit many households hard, and could result in more people falling behind on bills. As things stand, they will then face a punitive process in which councils are demanding full repayment of their annual bill, piling on extra charges and sending the bailiffs in - all within six weeks of a single missed council tax payment.

“The government is considering changing this council tax collection process in England. It needs to act now, or else rises in bills will lead to more unnecessary despair for people who are already struggling.” Helen Undy, Chief Executive, Money and Mental Health

Read our new research 👇 🔗 www.moneyandmentalhealth.org/publications... 📢 We want the government to ensure banks consistently offer a standard package of tools that make it easier for people to share money management in a safe and legally protected way. This should include:
Carers cards which people can use to authorise a carer to make purchases on their behalf.
Third party account notifications enabling someone to authorise a trusted person to receive alerts about their account. Third party payment controls - enabling an individual to authorise a trusted person the option to block some types of payment - e.g. gambling or large payments.

As a result, many people with mental health problems are resorting to risky workarounds to get support from a trusted person such as sharing their pin or log-in details. That breaches the terms and conditions of their bank account, and leaves them vulnerable to financial abuse.
“I was mentally unwell. Had someone I thought I trusted try to help. Instead I was coerced into giving them £1000s of pounds thinking they were helping me. [...] I am vulnerable and easily misled and taken advantage of. I put my trust in others, but that backfires.” Expert by experience.
