As petrol and diesel prices surge in the wake of the continued attacks on Russian refineries and escalating tensions in the Middle East, it is now nine times cheaper to drive an EV than a diesel car in the UK, This means EV drivers save ~£80 when "filling up" www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-evs...

For this week's Debriefed newsletter, I took a look at the 200-year old history of EVs, Wild that the first production EV in the UK came 10 years before the first petrol car and that a third of US cars were EVs ~1900. I'm also a big fan of the "Hummingbird" taxis pictured below ⬇️ shorturl.at/J059C

Solar generation reached record levels over the summer, with 8.8TWh of power between June and August, CB analysis shows This is in part due to the very sunny summer months, but also the continued growth in solar capacity, helping to boost supply and cut bills www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-uk-...

Adapting to extreme temperatures is becoming increasingly important as Europe heats faster than any other continent on Earth. But it is more complicated than commentators in the US questioning why the continent has so little AC - especially when they compare heat deaths to gun deaths

Molly Lempriere @mollylempriere.carbonbrief.org · 10/07/2026
In places in southern Europe, AC is already fairly widespread So while there has been some historical resistance to the idea of AC, it is less to do with the idea that it is “un-European”, and much more to do with whether or not it was needed

Amid the record-breaking heat over the last few weeks, a culture war has broken out over the rollout of air conditioning But lots of the claims are missing some key bits of context - not least that it hasn’t really been an issue in northern Europe previously, because it just hasn’t been this hot

Guatemala said advances on the GGA are 'essential'. However, it cannot be achieved without progress on means of implementation and adaptation finance. They underscored the importance of accessible and predictable finance to support adaptation action

Generation from fossil fuels has occasionally fallen y-o-y in the past, but this is the first time it was due to the shift towards clean power, rather than economic crises or other events Record solar generation was key, increasing 30% y-o-y to meet 75% of global electricity demand growth alone

As part of a wave of new COP30 texts dropped this morning, there is a new, clean version of the just transition work programme. Crucially, this "decides" to develop a just transition mechanism - the Belem Action Mechanism (BAM) - proposed originally by civil society and taken up by G77+China

Speaking at a briefing last night, COP30 president André Corrêa do Lago discussed the roadblocks in the GGA, incl. finance: “We want this to be an adaptation COP. The Global Goal on Adaptation is absolutely central, and, obviously, the push for an increase in adaptation resources is significant.”

In a GGA huddle yesterday, LDC adaptation leads called for a tripling of finance: "Indicators are good...[but] indicators don't rebuild our washed-away villages, they don't fix our buildings. Indicators only show you what's going on. So beyond the indicators, we're asking for adaptation finance."
