I am incensed by sexual violence, and also angry that the systems that have disappointed people are actually working as intended. A system's purpose is what it does. It's pretty hard to make progress without acknowledging that.

2) It’s interesting (though predictable) that before they’ve read how the testing was conducted over 15 years I’ve seen comments attempting to debunk the results. The need to oppose is just knee jerk, even though this kind of circumstance was common in the slave society in which TJ lived.

1) Thank you, Karin. I’m happy that both the 1998 and 2026 DNA tests results jibe with the historical evidence compiled in my first book. I also think the historical information alone should be enough. But I know the world we live in & why DNA was brought into the picture.

For context, the Ohio Department of Education rated my children’s school a 2 out of five stars on its annual report last week. that makes it one of the lowest in the district, the largest district in the state. Look me in the eyes when I say this: school ratings based on test scores are bullshit.

I did not make this choice in isolation. Our local teachers union had its first strike in 40 years when we switched the kids out of their White-majority schools. Ohio has fierce education justice organizations that have taught me the difference between activism vs. organizing.
