Used to be that USPS would deliver a letter in 2-3 days, or maaaaybe 4-5 days if going completely across the country. These days, if you send a birthday card a week ahead, you absolutely cannot count on it arriving on time.

One thing that always amuses me is to hear a song and tell my husband I had the 45” of it. I had 9 to 5 on 45” which my sisters and I played and sang nonstop after seeing the movie in the theater.

I have a kid who recently moved from The Hague to Rotterdam after for 4 years of living there. It is real gem. I love the dunes, the beach, the city, the restaurants. And Museum Voorlinden (not mentioned in the article) is probably my favorite art museum anywhere. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/05/w...

Started but gave up on Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall, and The House of Fortune by Jessie Burton, which is a follow up to The Miniaturist. May go back to House of Fortune. I'm part way through Emily Wilson's translation of the Odyssey, and currently reading Daniel Mason's new book "Country People."

Favorites in this stack of 2026 reads: London Falling (A+ page turner), North Woods (loved the structure of the book), Go Ahead in the Rain (favorite writer), Rough Sleepers (Tracy Kidder was so gifted at inspiring us). The Housekeeper and the Professor (same author as the excellent Memory Police).
