All week I’ve been wondering if the thing my cats are staring at is a pantry moth or a ghost. Now I desperately want to write a story about this but I can’t figure out the angle or POV and the most deranged part of my brain keeps going “give the POV to the moths”

I was watching the 1966 film adaptation of Mary McCarthy’s The Group last night and couldn’t figure out why the actor playing Libby looked so familiar, and then it hit me: she’s Lucille Bluth!

The shifting feeling is relatable to me! My most logic-lacking aspect is always the layout or construction of things, like stairs that you up for awhile just to send you back down or walls made out of sand that dissolve away, that sort of thing!

Admittedly every story I write starts out with *at least* 500 words that need to be scrapped 😅 I feel like I have a natural tendency to write into the 5,000-word range before realizing while editing that I actually wrote a 4,000-word story!

A bunch of years ago, before I knew anything about poetry, I wrote this poem on the porch of an old farmhouse in central Virginia. I've learned a lot since then about form and diction and <poetry stuff>. But I still love this little rough thing. It was so honest.

A Train Poem

At six o'clock the train is loud, passing
by the house we’ve rented, where we
sit on the porch, car after car, and
Dave says, My son would love
this, and I imagine his boy running
down the hill through the trees, thrumming
like the train, like my son, who hates
trains and all loud noises, hates
nature and all bugs, shadows, itchy
branches, but still he'd run with Dave’s
boy, and maybe they'd be friends.
Two kids, almost not kids
anymore, who don't always know the how
of friendship, but who always know how
to go fast, how to move forward then
back, around and around, miles and
miles, like a train, like a motor thrumming
to life, two boy-men chasing this big track to
its end. Then off into the field beyond.
