I grew up in St. Louis between the early 50s and late 60s. Catholic working-class neighborhoods full of people who never went anywhere but work, church, and relatives' homes. All I knew of Missouri outside StL were the signs for towns along I-70 on the way to/from KC where my grandfather lived.
